“Good Food and Excellent Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

We've had several Easter buffets in Austin over the years. This Easter we opted for Carmelo's - we'd always had good food and attentive service. This visit was no exception, while the buffet was not as extensive as sometimes seen, every dish was well prepared and delicious. Our party of 5 did manage to try everything! The buffet was constantly refreshed and appealing.
Add to that the always appreciated valet parking, pleasant atmosphere, the live music and you have a delightful meal.
Carmelo's has a great location in downtown Austin and they're consistently hitting the mark.

“Great food in an historic building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

SXSW was just over and they were tearing down the entertainment setups so we were more than a little concerned that the restaurant might have been "worn out" from the previous weeks festivities. Not so !! In fact this worked in our favour as we had the place to ourselves with great food and sevice while we were able to converse with the staff a learn about the history of the building

“It was okay, but wouldn't go back”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

Service was wonderful, but the restaurant was not very full and this was during SXSW. The food was okay. The decor in this place reminded me of countless cheezy Italian places I've seen on the East Coast, with a bust of Caesar, fake plants, etc. Ever see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? Ok, that was Greek, but you get the idea.

“italian like tony bennett, no more”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

this is the admittedly the first italian restaurant i've ever visited in the united states. oh dear. the decour and music was classic sopranos-tony-bennett-americana. the service was excellent but the food less so. i started with bruschetta and fried brie. the bruschetta was 4 morsels of over-toasted weakly seasoned bread; the brie lacked bite. my main course of eggplant parmigiana accompanied by spaghetti pomodoro was vile. the 4 small individual pieces of eggplant were practically raw (they should have been fried separately before being baked), the tomato sauce had been spooned on top, and the entire dish tasteless. the spaghetti was overcooked and had, i suspect, been dropped onto the plate with the sauce spooned on top. it had NOT been prepared in in the pan, the tomato sauce had NOT been cooked into the pasta!!! at that point i knew i was doomed. i returned my meal immediately and ordered gnocchi instead. now, how could they get that wrong?! well, instead of being presented with a bowl of fresh gnocchi cooked it the sauce, i got a long narrow plate with about 10 FRIED gnocchi covered with 10 times too much pesto... and topped with pine nuts. it was less vile than the previous dish and i was starving so i ate it up. i skipped dessert (of course) and ordered an espresso, which tasted watery and bitter. then i was presented with a bill for $36. my advice for anyone who is used to genuine italian cuisine: look elsewhere.

“Great food, nice atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013 via mobile

Located across the street from the Hilton. The best Italian food we've ever eaten. My husband had the mixed grill, I had the swordfish. It was a little pricey but we had appetizers, dinner, wine, coffee and dessert. We enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff was great. We didn't have a reservation although they are recommended. We were seated within 30 minutes. I would definitely recommend Carmelo's!
