“Above average Indian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013 via mobile

A coworker and I got drinks and the peshwari naan in the bar while we waited to be texted that our table was ready, it was heavy but decent. We then got the chicken samosas when we were seated, the filling had great flavor.

I was torn between the rack of lamb and chicken tikka masala, I opted for the lamb and was very impressed with the quality of the cut and flavors. It came with a side of rice with tikka masala sauce for the table, so in the end I got the best of both worlds.

We split the rice pudding for dessert, it had good flavor but not many raisins or nuts. A side note - I ordered the recommended Petit Syrah for the lamb dish and it was a large pour, so they don't skimp at the bar.

I would eat here again.

“Just about average”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

This place has a great ambience. Great selection of alcohol for alcohol crazy folks. The service is decent but takes a while usually. Main thing: Food is just ok. There are other restaurants in Austin that serve better Indian food for the money. This restaurant is pricy as well.

Disclaimer: I am a vegetarian so I can't claim to know how the meat contained food tastes. Speaking for the vegetarian food, I'd give it a 4 on 10.

“Order it Hot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

The Clay Pit in Austin offers a great introduction to many of the classic curries of India along with few modern/fusion twists of their own.

The Pakoras or Tandoori bites are a good place to start. The Jalapeño Cream Cheese Naan is a great accompaniment to Lamb Roganjosh & Channa Masala, two of our favorite main dishes. NOTE: You can specify your spice level, so don't be intimidated by curry. The kabobs and grilled meats are excellent options for those less inclined to spice. Vegetarian options abound.

The bar offers an extensive list of specialty cocktails. The New Delhi is recommended. TIP: Half price wine by the bottle on Monday nights. The restaurant can get busy so reservations suggested. Service generally keeps up with the crowd.
