I've heard such raves of this place, but the food was a disappointment on our only visit--maybe not fair to judge them on a single meal, but it seemed clear the food just isn't that complex or interesting. I had the banana leaf wrapped tamal, only available Th-Sun. The masa was bland and the filling was unremarkable (3 dry meats, some frozen-tasting vegetables) and while it didn't taste bad, it just didn't have any oomph. The green salad was shredded bag lettuce with bottled Italian dressing, why bother? My husb had the ropa vieja, which was much tastier, but again, sort of "surface" flavors, not deep rich flavor from slow cooking or quality ingredients. My passion fruit mimosa, which the waitress/bartender raved about, was similarly one-note. Again, not bad, but not particularly yummy, frozen fruit and cheap champagne. I'm a fan of dives, but the interior of the old house lacks charm, organization, or appeal, and doesn't look overly clean. Our waitress was nice, but it was clear no one was really trained to wait tables. Took forever to get check and pay. Unimpressed enough not to suggest returning.
