“Unique experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

Once you have sampled just a few dishes here, you will have tried an amazing array of flavors, fresh ingredients, wonderful sauces, spectacular presentation-- hopefully all paired with a well chosen beer and wine selection. We were a party of four, and that enabled us to try almost everything on the menu. The plates are really small- best shared with 2 people- 4 next to impossible. The service was fantastic- overall very pricey. Fits in surprisingly well with the "New" South Austin- casual, unassuming- but knockout food; very focused on being a memorable dining experience. Excellent, can't wait to go back!

“Highly recommended for amazing flavors and attentive service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

Small plates for sharing, that's the fad nowadays. The flavors here are remarkable with so many unique ingredients. Very small place with small communal tables where you'll be best buddies with your tablemates before the end of your meal. Excellent selection of wines and beers. Very knowledgeable and attentive service. Foodies, do make Barley Swine a part of any dining tour of Austin!

“Barley Swine, from its Odd Duck roots”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Bryce Gilmore took his innovative cuisine from a trailer to a modest restaurant a short distance down Lamar Avenue. The menu has expanded, but it is just as innovative as ever. The locally sourced food is turned into some of the most creative small plates that you will ever taste anywhere. I've dined at the Barley Swine several times and have never been disappointed. The restaurant is small and reservations are not accepted. You may have a wait, but it is worth it.

“Creative tasty food, casual fun atmosphere - a lot of fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

An order of fried okra, black eye peas and hush puppies - you think you have a good idea what you're going to get. Not at Barley Swine you don't: it was food art, delicious and surprising and beautiful. I tried 4 dishes, including a red fish special that was superb, and another bacon and potato special that was excellent, paired with wine selected by the server. All of the dishes were excellent, except for dessert: a deconstructed German (sb German's) chocolate cake didn't add up. I should have pushed the limit and tried the avocado mousse or the donuts with smoked bacon ice cream that the guy next to me at the bar enjoyed.

Was lucky to get in solo without a wait - there was an empty seat at the bar.The joint was packed and it was fun. When I think of Austin I'll think of Barley Swine.

“Fru fru”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Highly acclaimed by professionals and repeat customers alike. My husband was very impressed with the personal attention given to all aspects by the young chef. I was a bit taken aback by all the organ meats such as thymus gland, liver, kidneys, etc. It seems you better be the adventurous sort or take someone along who can decipher the menu for you!
