“Great Location, Very Hip Place to Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

We went in expecting modern and hip and that is what we got. The website is totally cool. Check in and check out was great. Room service very good; breakfast served in a box. Order the broken egg sandwich. Go to Jo's for coffee; it is awesome. We went for a weekend to listen to great live music across the street at Continental Club and to explore all the food trucks along South Congress. The stores and galleries are totally great too, many open at night. Plan on parking the car and not getting back into it until you check out. Lots to do within walking distance for the weekend. Book early. The only rooms available were suites so we opted for the garden suite. It is about the same price as a standard room at the Four Seasons with a balcony. San Jose offers free wifi and parking. Bring slippers because the floor is concrete.

“Great place, but overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

We stayed here for a wedding weekend in January. The hotel is hip and cozy, but we were disappointed in the quality and service for the price. The rooms are minimalist, but not stark, with concrete floors and an ipod dock, nice sheets, and lovely soft robes. But for the price, the bathroom was a real disappointment. For $330 / night I expect some nice fixtures, a nice bathtub. Instead there is an industrial, teeny sink, a basic toilet, basic subway tile, basic shower head and tub combo. I don't need all kinds of perks, but they didn't have a shower cap at the front desk which is basic when people travel for events. Also we spent Saturday walking around, and when we got back at 3pm to get ready for an early evening wedding the room had not yet been cleaned. All perfectly acceptable for half the price. Location is great.

“Perfect spot, just few little notes..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Most of what was already said about this hotel is what I too would say. However, I want to add just a couple things. There are several comments about the hipster vibe of this place. I didn't feel that you have to be super cool to feel comfortable here. We are from NY but are more crunchy granola type than hip Williamsburg folk and we were still pleasantly received by the staff who were friendly and helpful, unlike many other reviews have stated. I would rather someone be moderately friendly and give me the information I need than be cloyingly nice and waste my time with chit chat. Anyway.. few other points- we came in off a long wknd of staying out late with friends and then a four hr flight.. we wanted to sleep asap. The original room we had (46) was set back from the patio/ restaurant area but was still within range of hearing the crowd laugh and talk into the night. If you're looking for very quiet I would request rooms towards the far left of the property (33-36 or so).. its totally secluded back there and the second room we were given after asking to switch on the second day of our stay was larger and really nice. As others mentioned there is a minimalist quality to the decor but that is their point its not that something is lacking or was overlooked. The vibe here is about local sustainability and this hotel is on board with the recycled rainwater, natural bath products etc. One word of caution- if you're expecting the water pressure to feel like the rain shower at the W, it won't but again the point is to conserve but still be adequate, which it was. The beds are cozy and the linens were soft and CLEAN..that's almost all that matters to me. The location here as others have said is great if you want to be within walking distance to great cafes and bars. Joe's coffee next door was something we were looking forward to but for us it was way over hyped. The "turbo" coffee tasted mostly like syrup and the chai had no flavor except for the almond milk in it. . But its a cute convenient place if you just need a quick straight up cup of coffee before you get going. This is a sort of disjointed review because I still have a little bit of travel brain but.. it's also important to mention that this hotel offers FREE parking which not many in the area do in fact another hotel we considered charged $36 per night-no thanks.. and the San Jose also rents bikes which is a perfect option for cruising around the city. We visited the Capitol building that is about 1-2 miles down the street and cool to see (also free) we also drove 35mins out to Hamilton pool preserve which is a natural swimming hole and really pretty to see. I'll close with the key points- this is a great clean hotel in an ideal location of a funky city.. the staff are real humans not super perky robots but they are helpful and accommodated our requests.. I'm totally satisfied staying here and would come back again. Thanks!

“basically, incomparable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

The Hotel San Jose has become legendary in my house.

I had two trips to Austin last year. Prior to the first, I searched to find a cool place to stay and thought San Jose fit the bill. Sadly, it was completely booked. But when I found out I would be returning to Austin, I made sure to book both nights at the Hotel San Jose.

This place is just about the hippest hotel you can imagine. Our experience: a supremely tasty cheese plate (honestly, about the best I've ever had) served with chilled wine under cool ceiling fans. In the evening, especially on a beautifully clear night, a packed patio -- and they weren't hotel guests! Then, in the morning, a quick walk across the parking lot to Joe's Coffee. Really -- and keep in mind I'm an unashamed coffee snob -- some of the best brew and pastries I've ever had.

More to the point: rooms were sparse and minimalist, *just my style, and filled with vintage Eames classics. The bed was decently comfy. Bathrooms, though, were fairly "vintage" and could maybe use modernization. The grounds, however, are gorgeous. It's worth walking through even if you aren't staying. Gravel paths, silver-toned wood fences, trellises covered with greenery.

Friends and family staying at other hotels in Austin openly regretted not staying with us at the San Jose once they saw the place. 100% recommend.
