“Good value motel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2007

Like the other reviews said - this is a great value. We had the smallest room with a shower and double bed for only $65/night. The room was cute with hardwood floors and some kitschy decor that fit in with the spirit of the motel. Also, it is right on South Congress so you can walk to several great restaurants and shops. Jo's Coffee is right next door for the best coffee ever, along with breakfast tacos and yummy baked goods. If you don't mind walking, you can walk up Congress and get downtown and even to the University of Texas campus. The folks at the front desk were just great, very friendly and helpful. So for the budget conscious traveler, this is a great place to set up camp when visiting Austin.

But...if you like your amenities, then this may not be the place for you. It was ok on cleanliness, but not quite up to my general standards. The bed was so mushy that we rolled into the middle of it and everytime the other person moved, I'd wake up. The buttons on the TV were missing - apparently, someone was going around stealing the buttons for some strange reason. The shower wouldn't drain properly and had standing water in it; no clocks; threadbare towels; some small red ants; and bring your own toiletries because they essentially provide some soap and skimpy shampoo.

This is a great find for the budget traveler! I paid $65/night and got a cute little single room with a REALLY comfy bed. The room was basic; a TV, full-size bed, nightstand and dresser, closet, and a private bathroom with a shower. It provided for my basic needs but you really want to go there for its location and charm. It's on the north end SoCo shopping, right across the street for Amy's Ice Cream (a must while you visit) and the Continental Club, where you'll find some great local bands playing any given day of the week. Take a couple of hours and walk south on Congress and find amazing food (Vespaio Restaurant!) and some truly unique shops.

  • Liked — The price for the location.
  • Disliked — Just a little run down.

We stayed in a pool-front suite for a Friday, Saturday & Sunday; it was quite lovely. I liked the refrigerator, alarm clock & hair dryer provided. However, the tub did not drain which made for some soggy-footed showers. But the room was clean, had character & the a/c worked well. On Sunday morning, I noticed 2 small centipedes on the bathroom floor, oh well. The following weekend, we stayed for Friday & Saturday night in one of the lower priced rooms in the back of the place in the 2-story building. There was no refrigerator, hair dryer or clock of any sorts. The a/c was way too cold even on the lowest setting, but at least the bathtub drained this time. The bed was a little lumpy & uncomfortable. There was a strange-looking bug in the bathtub Saturday night, but nothing gross. However, when I went back into the room, there was a large cockroach on the floor that my husband chased down & eventually killed. That was a little disconcerting, but we were checking out the next morning anyway. I'm a little surprised that we had to spend an hour re-dialing to get through to make reservations. Overall, The Austin Motel has potential to be a really cool place & has way more character than a chain, but there seems to be a lack of interest in keeping it maintained well & therefore that makes it a bit of an overpriced place to stay. The pool is at least kept clean to swim in. Great location though & Jo's Coffee right next door was amazing!

  • Liked — It's unique character, the pool, the pool-front suite, LOCATION!
  • Disliked — Lack of maintenance in the cheaper rooms, cockroach

Our party rented 2 rooms and the larger double queen room was fine. The shower in the smaller single room did not work, and there was no bedside table or bedside light. Neither of the rooms had clocks. The bathrooms were very clean and the pool area was pretty and clean with plenty of towels. However, the premises except for the pool area are pretty seedy and well worn. It was pretty much as I expected for such low prices. I'd stay here again, but I'd go for the higher priced rooms.

  • Liked — location and pool area
  • Disliked — except for pool property looked rundown

Set back from a broad multi-lane avenue, yet quiet. Very close to several restaurants and funky shops. Each room has a different theme. Funky, a bit corny, but it's a fifties/sixties style motel, it's supposed to be. At least you get what you pay for here. Staff was friendly. A pleasant, down to earth place to stay. I would stay there again.

  • Liked — Location and down to earth yet funky atomsphere.

I was in Austin for a conference and stayed in the Austin Motel for three nights. This was my second stay at the property. I love the SoCo neighborhood but really did feel that the property was overpriced. The room was OK but probably not worth what I paid for it. Certain amenities, like kleenex and an alarm clock, would have made my stay more pleasant and a decent quality toilet paper would have been appreciated at over $125 per night. On the positive side, the swimming pool was fabulous, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the location great.

My husband and I stayed here for three days and nights for a wedding. While the decor of the rooms are a bit strange, we loved the place. It was unique. It was clean. Th epool was perfect. It was in a very convenient location in terms of walking for breakfast, lunch, drinks, shopping, music, and a bar scene.
