Owner description: If it's in Texas, it must be bigger and better. That is the motto that architects followed with the Capitol Building in Austin. At one time, it was the tallest capitol building in the nation. Others might be taller now, but this is still a beautiful building that shows off many of the natural resources which are so prevalent in Texas, such as limestone and the landscapes.

“A must see in Austin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2010

You can't come to Austin and not see the Capitol building.

The architecture is great, both inside and out. The grounds are nice too.

Take the time to join a (free!) tour once your inside. The guides are really friendly and informative.

If you're not up to date with your Texan history, visit the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum before you go - it'll make the tour that much more interesting because you'll really know what they're talking about.

We participated in the guided tour of the Capitol, it was very interesting and definitely worth attending. Loads of historic information is presented.

“A Must See...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2009

I can't believe this is #13 on the list of popular things to do in Austin, while some generally unheard of spa is #1. Oh, internet...

As an Austinite, I love to take visitors to the Capitol. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting government buildings I've visited. The grounds themselves are lovely, and provide a nice picnic spot (not recommended in the middle of a Texas summer).

The interior is beautiful. The tours are interesting. There are some great portraits (including one of the American legend- Davy Crockett). You can watch the legislature debate and make law. Pay close attention to fixtures and other details on the building -- Texas pride shines through, with stars and "Texas" branded in places you'd never imagine.

A nice, FREE outing for all ages. A cool place to learn about Texas, or just spend some leisure time.

“A gorgeous building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2009

We stopped here with the kids after a day of roaming Austin and taking the Duck Tour. We didn't do a tour, so I'm sure we missed out on a lot of the historical facts that we would have been told. Next time we'll take the tour. But it was incredible just to walk around the building, go upstairs, see the gorgeous architecture and feel in awe of standing in the capitol. If you stand in the very center and look up at the dome, your voice will echo back to you. The kids were really good about stopping and reading the plaques by the paintings and statutes that are all around. Very glad we made the stop.

“State Capitol - Austin, TX”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2009

We had a great experience when we visited Austin, TX. We first visited Zilker Park / Barton Springs which was really awesome! The kids had a blast in the pool! Then we stopped by the State Capitol which was really a great experience for the whole family. We learned some history of Texas and the building itself was already an attraction. Overall, I would give a 5/5 rating on this trip! You won't regret it, give yourselves a favor and visit Austin!
