We stayed two nights at the Holland Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Hotel and restaurant staff were universally friendly and helpful. The train will probably wake you up more than once at night, but we didn't find it to be a problem. The microbrewery within the Edelweiss Restaurant offered several excellent brews. We had a great chat with a local who sat next to us at the bar in the Edelweiss. Yes, their beers are good enough to attract a loyal local following.

The Holland is an old hotel. Do not expect a sterile, generic room. Every room has a unique decor. If you want a bland, featureless hotel room, try the Ramada on the outskirts of town. If you want a memorable stay at an historic hotel that has charm and character, pick the Holland. It is not perfect and does not claim to be. However, if you encounter any problems the staff will bend over backwards to help you out. Check out their website. If you appreciate the sense of humor with which it was written, you'll enjoy the Holland. I especially liked the traffic report on their website.

The desk staff was courteous and accommodating. The hotel offers free internet access, which was a bonus. We stayed in the Crows Nest room. This is a free standing room added to the roof, with good views of the town and the terrain all around. It has a private wooden deck extending over the roof from the room. The room is compact, private, and clean, but in need of refurbishment (water stains on the ceiling, broken window glass, track lighting that doesn't work). The included breakfast and the service was just not great, so we choose not to eat this free meal after the first morning (we stayed 3 nights). The Bread and Breakfast, a small restaurant one block east from the hotel, was a tastier choice... with fresh baked pastries and breads! We also enjoyed two local Alpine "mom and pop" restaurants for dinner: La Casita Mexican Restaurant on East Avenue H served TexMex, and Texas Fusion Cafe on Murphy Avenue served Texas Home Cookin', BBQ, and TexMex. All three restaurants have good food, reasonable prices, and pleasant and efficient service. All three restaurants are classical small-town West Texas restaurants, with the locals greeting each other coming and going.

Hotel is very charming and has lots of character. Very conveniently located to many of the town's attractions. Enjoyed the live entertainment each night at the EDELWEISS restaurant and brewery. Very reasonably priced. Only drawback is that the train is kind of loud at night.

The hotel is very charming. I did like the look and the price. Unfortunately, we had a comedy of errors during our overnight stay. Most of the problems were not the fault of the hotel. When we first got there, my husband wanted to shower. There was no hot water. We called and this was due to a town wide gas outage, which was fixed, but must have blew out the pilot. No problem. Then, the power went on and off three or four times. So, we went down to the restaurant for dinner. After being ignored for a while, we were seated in the far corner. I like our waitress, but the food was slow. We go back upstairs and find that a little mouse has gotten in a climbed to the top of the shower curtain. It was actually very entertaining. He was adorable. My husband took a picture, put him in a trash can, and let him out in the alley.

Like others have said, the train is noisey. It went by about 3 times. It didn't bother me too bad. We were bothered by the pillows, which were way too plump and by the heater that blew across our faces all night. Breakfast was ok, but the waitress was not very friendly. All in all, I have mixed feelings about the place. I would probably stay again, but would find somewhere else to eat.
