For travelers passing through Abilene on Interstate 20, Belle's Chicken Dinner House provides a different and most enjoyable dining experience. The restaurant is located only minutes from the Interstate and very near where I-20 intersects with Hwy. 83/277 (the Winters Freeway). Unfortunately, Belle's is open only for lunch and dinner on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and for "Sunday Dinner" on Sunday afternoons.
Upon entering the family-style dining room containing lots of large tables and having a distinctive "down home, country-style appearance," diners are greeted by a friendly hostess who tells them that the restaurant does not have a menu and that dining options will be explained to them by their waitress. Shortly after being seated, Ellen, our waitress appeared with two huge, freshly baked rolls and began explaining the menu to us.
As Ellen explained, diners have a choice of five meat items ( chicken fingers, chicken-fried steak, catfish, chicken and dumplings, and chicken-fried rib eye steak). With the dinner comes the freshly baked rolls (with honey) that we were already enjoying and the "all you can eat" helpings of mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and corn that are served family style. Tea, soft drinks, and other beverages are available at a reasonable additional charge.
My wife and I made a difficult choice and decided to order the chicken strips, but agreed to return to Belle's to try their famous chicken-fried rib eye steak. Because of the size of meat portions of the dinner and the unlimited servings of vegetables diners receive, we decided to share one full dinner, have a second dinner with only the vegetables, and then share the chicken fingers. As advertised, the portions were huge; we were very full after sharing one order of chicken strips and enjoying the vegetables. All items were cooked and served homestyle; each was delicious. We especially liked the corn, thought it was very fresh, and asked for "seconds" on this menu item.
The restaurant also serves several types of pies. Unfortunately, we were way too full to order pie for dessert, but did add some extra honey to our freshly baked rolls and were most satisfied with this as our desssert.
Ellen, our waitress was very personable and most attentive to our needs. We also enjoyed meeting Joe Martinez, Restaurant Manager, learning about the restaurant, and especially about the special way they prepare their delicious corn. Both individuals did all possible to make sure that our dining experience at Belle's was a pleasant and enjoyable one.
I highly recommend Belle's Chicken Dinner House to TripAdvisor Travelers looking for a delicious dinner served by an attentive wait staff in a relaxing and most interesting setting. My wife and I had a great chicken finger dinner and are looking forward to return visits to Belle's to try their chicken-fried rib eye steak, the chicken and dumplings... .
