“Housekeeping Poor, Front Desk Indifferent to Customer Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

I just had a terrible experience at your Clarion Hotel in Aiken SC
1. We attempted to check in at 3:45 PM on Tuesday afternoon. A rather unpleasant man behind the counter said we couldn't check in until 4. So we waited, as did several others, until 4 PM. Silly as rooms were clearly "ready" (to be defined).
2. Room - no soap, not a big deal. NO SHOWER Curtain. So went down to front desk and got soap and reported no shower curtain. After dinner, still no shower curtain. Next morning, still no shower curtain.
3. We left the hotel at 7 AM on Wednesday and I reported to the front desk before we left that we really needed a shower curtain. Gone ALL DAY - returned to hotel at 5 PM and the room wasn't even made up!! We did, however, have a shower curtain. That was nice.
4. Front desk staff terrible. Housekeeping not good. Other staff, like the folks serving breakfast, were wonderful.
5. Bugs in light fixture in bathroom - gross!

Will never go back to that hotel - and question whether it is worth patronizing Choice Hotels at all.

I am not a complainer - but this was so bad, someone needed to know.

our plans changed several times and we were accommodated with friendly service. Had 2 rooms- staff arranged for us to be close to each other. one small plumbing issue was resolved fairly quick. hotel was most accessible to the park where the wedding took place, as well as to shopping, restaurants and near the downtown area where we went to church.. Friendly staff- thanks especially to Ora at the front desk..... will stay again.

We stayed here in June 2012, and again in Jan 2013. Same excellent service, large room, puffy towels, even 4 pillows on the bed. Clean, up-to-date. Breakfast is decent - cheese omelet and sausages, cereals, fruit. room heater/AC was quiet. It was a bit pricey for us ($69 incl. tx), but it's worth it for a short stay

Just needed one night and this worked well. Staff was attentive and took care of a problem with the first room without question. The Applebee's across the street was very convenient for dinner. The area seemed nice and was fairly close to the downtown area and USC Aiken.

Don't let the outside fool you! This hotel is very pleasant from the moment you walk in. This was my second visit and both times the front desk and housekeeping staff were courteous and kind. I travel with my dog when I visit Aiken and many times you can tell you have been put in a "pet" room. Not here, my room was very clean and the pet fee has changed to only $15 a day! (from $45) I look forward to my next visit in November.

We were surprised by the size of the room. The king-sized bed was a good fit - often a hotel will squeeze 2 queens into a room like this, which takes up too much room. Micro-wave and refrigerator, TV with lots of channels, wi-fi readily available - no code entry needed. Wi-fi didn't work one morning, but there is a modem on the desk that did work. Wi-fi came back on later.
Breakfast included cheese omelets, bacon alternating with sausage, juice, coffee, tea, makings for cold cereal and grits, rolls.
Our room was by the pool, and the second night we were there (of 2) some group had a party there which disturbed more than just us. Finally went to their rooms about 11.
This is a very attractive property. It recently was a Holiday Inn Express (that name still appears on the wi-fi connection), but the Clarion rate (about $65) was very reasonable. New sinks were being installed in several second-floor rooms while we were there. The hot tub was not in service, but the pool was in use by other guests.
Location is good - the north end of the busy commercial street. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby, but not much walkable.

Room Tip: This is a quiet location, but you might avoid the pool area.

Bonafide hotel snob, raising my hand over here!
After reading the reviews, I was a little bit scared to check in at the Clarion. However, there aren't many options in Aiken, and the location and ability to have dogs couldn't be beat.
I was quite pleased. Comfortable beds though scantily clad, no damp hotel stink in the room, shower was great, couldn't complain too much about a 70$ hotel room that allowed dogs!
If I were being picky, the blankets on the bed are really sort of pathetic. I like a good chunk of blankets to fight off the chill from a cranked hotel AC unit.
The drain in the shower was faulty, and there were some mildew stains on the interior of the shower curtain.
I've stayed there twice at this point, and the second stay was even more pleasing than the first.
Would I recommend this hotel if you were looking for luxury? Well, no. But it's a cheap hotel in a great location. Can't complain :)

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are a bit quieter
