My wife and I have lived in Ashland for 25 years and tend to stay away from expensive restaurants anywhere in the world...perhaps it's due to a sometimes snobbish attitude on the part of the help...an inverse ratio of price to the amount of food served...asking the question "Is this food really 4 times as good as what we can get just down the street a bit?"..or maybe it's as basic as our ability to pay our monthly mortgage payment. In this case, it was a gift certificate for $100. from my sister that brought us to Alchemy. Bottom line?..this was one of the best meals we have eaten anywhere. Mini-Wellington's...Small Crab salad...Halibut special of the day..Flank Steak..all caused both of us to attempt to suppress groans of ecstasy (we failed). Our dessert was Deconstructed Lemon Meringue Pie...while it was excellent, we would have preferred to not have to reconstruct it. With this being the middle of November, the Shakespeare season had ended, so reservations wouldn't have been as necessary. We began our meal at 5:30 p.m. on a friday evening and were were one of only two couples in the restaurant at that time. By our departure at 7 p.m., many more diners were in the restaurant. With tip, and one glass of wine (they have an extensive wine list) our total bill came to $120.90 in US dollars.
Suggestions to the management:
. Your newer server the night we were there (one year experience) wasn't up to the level of the food he served us. He was nice, but not as knowledgeable as he should have been. Spend more time being consistently seamless in that department.
. Our eyesight is good, but in the dimly lit, grey-walled surroundings, we had trouble reading the menu. More warm light at table-side would help, and would amp up the romance factor as well.
. On a cold winter night, turn the heat up a bit as soon as your first customers arrive, not later when more people are there.
Finally, and most importantly, to all of you in Gastronimica-land...If you can afford it, eat here!

Thank you so much for joining us! I am thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your meal, and incredibly grateful for the feedback. We are aware that all servers, regardless of their tenure, can always be a little more seamless in their service. However, it is good to know exactly where we need to focus. We are also looking for new way to liven up the dining room with more color, and we agree, the dining room can be a bit cold. This last winter in particular took a toll on our old building and heating system. Thank you so much for writing. Without honest feedback we can't continue to improve. I hope you have a chance to join us again, maybe in the bar where things are a little more casual.
