“Favorite Ashland Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2009

We have been staying at the Ashland HI Express since it opened. The hotel just finished a major renovation. We attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and stay at the hotel - even though it isn't within walking distance of the theaters and downtown Ashland. The staff at the hotel is always cordial and helpful. The rooms are quiet in spite of the fact that the hotel is located adjacent to Interstate 5. We have never had a problem with noise from the freeway or from adjacent rooms.
The new renovation includes a complete remodeling of the lobby and breakfast area. All of the carpets throughout the hotel are new. New flat screen TVs have been added to the rooms.

This was the first stop on a 12 day road trip. We found the hotel to be very clean, comfortable and accomodating. The rooms were very spacious. The hotel is new and in a good location. The complimentary hot breakfast in the morning had something for everyone in our family.

Stayed just one night in Ashland (as a stop between our home in Eastern Washington and our final destination in Northern California). We typically pick Holiday Inn Express locations because they usually accept dogs (as did this one); they are not too expensive; and I usually get pretty good service as I am a Platinum member of Holiday Inn's frequent stayer program. We arrived around 9 p.m. and had no problem checking in. Our reservation was in order and we got into our room, which was a large room (with 2 queen beds) and near the side entrance which was convenient. However, our key cards did not work at the side entrance... we went back to the front desk and they re-set them... at least one did work on the outside door... but later that night and then again the next morning, we had a problem with the outside door. Clearly, that lock needed some work. Overall the room was OK, but the lock problem was an annoyance.

  • Liked — accepts pets, but no really good walking area
  • Disliked — key cards not working

I stayed there for two nights and really enjoyed my stay. Front desk and other staff were very friendly and helpful. They have a full breakfast bar, very ample food. The breakfast room is rather small though and on one day there was no place to sit and I had to take the breakfast plate outside to eat. The bedroom was pretty large and very clean with a nice view of the hills. The bed was VERY comfortable. The carpet in the hallways looks a little old and could be replaced. My room was away from the freeway and was very quiet. The hotel is a few minutes drive from the downtown Shakespeare festival but I brought my bicycle and enjoyed the 15 minute bike ride to downtown. This is a smaller holiday inn and has a nicer, more intimate, relaxed feeling. A good value for the price.

  • Liked — congenial staff and quiet friendly atmosphere
  • Disliked — the carpet in the hallways was too old.

We have always been curious about this hotel because it looks clean, new, and has an indoor pool, but were hesitant to stay there b/c it was not within walking distance from the theaters. On this short trip with just my husband and 2 kids (both less than 5 years old), we decided to try it out.

The front desk staff were very courteous and checkin and checkout were fast. The rooms were clean and spacious and contained the amenities listed. It was also nice to have 2 sinks. The free wireless internet worked easily. My entire family loved the indoor pool (no sunscreen to worry about!), and they even kept it stocked with pool towels. Although we didn't use it, it was nice to know there was a small fitness center (I believe there was a treadmill and a stationary bike). Finally, the free breakfast was great. My husband said it would have been a perfect breakfast if it had included a waffle station as some of the other places we have stayed have, but I thought it was lovely the way it was with various pastries, yogurts, cereals, eggs, sausage, and bacon.

Going forward, I think we will always stay here anytime we aren't traveling with our family members for whom being able to walk to the theaters is a priority. Aside from that one detail, it was a near-perfect experience for our young family.

  • Liked — Clean and new, well-laid out
  • Disliked — Not walking distance from theaters

Ashland, OR is a great side trip from Crater Lake. We checked out the other hotels in the area, and this was the best location and value for the price. It's just minutes from downtown Ashland, and the rooms are fairly modern, kind of sparsely decorated, with wonderful beds and pillows. Fridge and microwave in room and free breakfast can't be beat. We were pleased with our choice for a one night stay in Ashland. Be sure to check out Litia Park while in Ashland.

This was not a good hotel...From the get-go the hotel was dingy and dirty. I was also foolish enough to expect a hotel advertised as non-smoking to have rooms that did not reek from cigarette smoke. I tried two different rooms and both had the same problem. But it was Saturday night during the Shakespeare Festival and other hotels were booked solid.

After I told the very young desk clerk I had a bad asthmatic condition, she told me to open the window, turn up the air conditioner and spray the room with an aerosol spray (she offered). Obviously, she had no concept of how serious this issue is for an asthmatic.

All I can say is spending one night at the Holiday Inn Express in Ashland was one night too many for me. And you can bet that I will never use this hotel chain again.

PS. I have booked with Hotwire many, many times over the years and have always been satisfied. But this reservation was a bust!

  • Liked — That I only had to spend one night.
  • Disliked — Smoke filled rooms and dingy hotel
