We come to lovely, charming Ashland from Kentucky every summer, primarily because of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Under artistic director Bill Rauch, the theater has grown even stronger and more creative than ever. That's saying something, because the place was exceptional even before Bill's arrival.
Most years, OSF produces 11-12 plays, most of which you can see over the summer when the schedules overlap. Outdoor plays are performed June-September every night except Monday at the Elizabethan Theatre, with other plays performed indoors February-November in Bowmer Theatre and New Theatre.
Most years, you can choose among up to four Shakespeare plays and a wide variety of others. Some are world premieres. Everything about the productions is outstanding. You will not see better theater anywhere in the world. And you will get to visit one of the prettiest small towns anywhere, in an area great for hiking, biking or just taking a stroll through fabulous Lithia Park. Good restaurants abound. Crater Lake and Redwoods National Parks are easy daytrips from Ashland.
Plan to stay at least a couple of nights and see more than one play. Don't be surprised if you get hooked on OSF and Ashland. We did.
