My husband and I decided to take advantage of some dry September weather and spend a couple of nights, mid-week, on the Oregon Coast.
We decided on the Inn at Arch Cape after getting many recommendations from friends who have lived in Oregon for many years.
We drove from our home in Portland to Cannon Beach, which is approximately 90 minutes from town, then 10 miles South on 101 to Arch Cape.
With the ocean and amazing coastline on one side and deep dark forests on the other, it is a fantastic drive.
But you have to pay attention or you will miss the turn off to the driveway to the Inn at Arch Cape.
We had the last vacancy available and it was perfect !
From the car park, you walk through charming gardens and an abundance of lavender bushes .
We had a small room with a huge Queen bed and an equally huge stone fireplace. A tiny kitchen with just what you need for morning coffee and perhaps a snack, and a tiny bathroom and we were set for our stay on the Oregon Coast.
First thing we had to do was walk down to the ocean, which is about a block from the hotel. The smell of woodsmoke in the air , the sound of the surf, had us wishing we could live there , or at least visit often.
We went to the small grocery on 101, by the Inn and picked up morning supplies, then drove into Manzanita for dinner.
We returned to Manzanita the next day for breakfast at Bread and Ocean, a great small catering/bakery place .
There is nothing like falling asleep with a fire dying in the fireplace and the sound of the surf pounding, the big bed was very comfortable and I often wish we were back there, taking a couple of days away from the "Real World "..
I look forward to going back .
The Inn at Arch Cape is also dog friendly.

I checked in to the Inn on a stormy and blustery friday evening, what a treat to walk into such a cozy and charming room, the river rock fireplace with REAL wood to burn, a fire already laid for us all we needed was a match. Needless to say I felt like I was at my parents beach cabin. The kitchen was stocked, although all we really used was the wine glasses! I had mentioned that this was an anniversary weekend when I made the reservation, and lo and behold the innkeeper had left us a chilled bottle of champagne so my partner and I could celebrate. Overall we had a wonderful stay, we will be back. On a side note - make sure you visit the new Wine bar in Manzanita - great find!

I was a little concerned after reading some previous guest's reviews but after a three day stay we found all of the complaints to be unfounded. This was a wonderful, cozy little place that came complete with a well stocked kitchen and a wood burning fireplace!

It's more like having your own little beach cabin than having a run-of-the-mill hotel room. We found the beds to be very comfortable and the fireplace was warm and easy to light as they lay a fire for you and all you do is light the little nugget things. One of the previous guests complained about non-working phones, no toaster or microwave and myriad other problems. Either all of the these issues have been fixed or their comments were false, our room had all of these items and did not leak once and two storms blew through during our stay. We loved the Inn at Arch Cape and will be coming back as we are getting a dog soon and live in Portland and it's a fairly quick trip!

“Overpriced and Disappointing”

Lesson learned -- ALWAYS check the TripAdvisor reviews before booking a place.

This place would be fine for a rustic "place to crash" if that is all one reequires, but there is nothing to recommend it beyond that. It is priced like an upscale lodging which it ISN'T, and in retrospect, we would have done much better (and at less cost) booking the well-appointed Hallmark Resort with an ocean view.

This is really just a home in a residential area (complete with persistently barking dog at the house next door) which has been converted into separate apartments. There is no ocean view, the beds were terrible. Our bed was sagging in the middle and the frame squeaked with every movement. Two other couples in our party were also staying at the lodge, and one couple found their bed to be so saggy and uncomfortable that they left after the first night (and of course there was no refund offered). Another reader mentioned the lack of lighting -- we too found no porch light, untrimmed vines at the entrance that forced us to duck to get into our room, and missing light bulbs in the room itself. There was no tea or cocoa in the kitchenette (only coffee), and no guide books or information about places to see or where to eat in the area.

The price for all this was outrageous, and we were charged premium rates because we were there the week before Christmas (even though our party were the only ones staying here at the time, and Cannon Beach was virtually dead, possibly because of a recent power outage).

As Portlanders, my husband and I enjoy occasional trips to the coast, but we will be giving this lodging a miss in the future.

This has to have been one of the most unpleasant experiences we've had! It's too bad our first experience with the Oregon coast started with staying at this Inn. As one of the other reviewers stated, the person who took the pictures for the website did a great job.

In the photo and even in reality, the rooms are very tastefully decorated so you are easily deceived into thinking you might be getting what you're paying for. However, we showed up to the property and this is what we were faced with:

---An overwhelming musty/spoiled milk smell that permeated everything. It was raining/storming, so there was no way we could open the windows to air it out -- you either suffer, getting headaches, being sick or decide to leave and find another place to stay. Albiet if you do the latter, you are subjected to their policies of NO REFUNDS! -- even when the room is basically uninhabitable.
---Soaked carpet in the entire living area. The floor was so wet, the towel we put down to to put our dog's bowl on had to be rung out within a matter of hours
---Leaking fireplace. While they laid what could have been a beautiful fire, the wood and paper was totally soaked. So was the stone facade of the actual fireplace
---shower nozzle that just about comes off in your hands when you go to turn it on
---Stopped up sinks
---shoddy housekeeping - including dirty utensils. I had to wash just about everything before I could/would use it. Of course it took more time because I had to wait for the sink to drain
---Countertop in the kitchen that's peeling off
---no toaster or microwave (how is that possible?)
---Very soft/old beds - basically plan on rolling into each other when you lie down
---non-working telephones and "safety" equipment such as the flashlight that was on the fireplace mantle. We lost power and ended up having to use the flashlight we have brought with us (thank goodness for Boy Scouts!)
---the breakfast that was included with the room never showed up!!!
---stair posterns that come off in your hands --making it possible to walk away with two rusted nails embedded in the palm of your hand. We did let managment know about that because that's very dangerous.

This site is not very customer-service oriented. Their policies are very stringent but you really don't know about it until it happens. They refuse to refund any of our pre-paid money even though we could only stay in the room for one night. We checked out four days early, met with the manager to discuss all the problems with the room and they offered us the room below the one we were in. Why would we move from a room with a totally soaked floor to the room below that would have the leaking ceiling?

I was standing there when a new customer pulled up and went and knocked on the door of the room they rented for the entire week. Someone else opened the door -- turns out they rented the same room to two different couples -- not exactly the best record keeping. The weather wasn't the best so one couple had been delayed in coming in but they still shouldn't have let another couple go into a pre-paid room.

I caution all of you when dealing with this property. Find a property that works with customers instead of against them -- that has a stated cancellation policy, check-in/out procedures, dry rooms, working facilities, etc.

They should do some repairs on the property and soon - otherwise there may be even more problems popping up.

We did find a much nicer place to stay and salvaged the remaining part of our vacation.
