“Country Girl Sleeps in a Silo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

Quaker Square has been on my travel bucket list for a number of years--but for one reason or another I have never gotten to stay there. I had a business meeting planned in the area so I knew this was my chance. I have to say after reading other reviews I wasn't expecting too much--but I didn't care because it was something I had wanted to do for such a long time. As someone who grew up on a farm with a silo--how cool to see larger ones "reused" for a hotel.

I was greeting warmly by a student working the front desk. (The added cookie she gave me was a nice touch) My room was nice and as interesting as I had hoped--being it was round and was a former oats silo. The bathroom was very nice with good toiletries. I found the architecture so interesting that a few places of loose carpeting was not a big deal to me. I loved the Don Drumm installed art pieces through out the lobby and when I asked about them the person working the front desk gave me a brochure about the artist--another nice touch. When I asked about the restaurants she gave me the information on hours & menus for those in Quaker Square and also a map that showed eating places for a several block area surrounding the hotel. I grabbed a late dinner in one restaurant that had a lot of college students--great wings--and the included free breakfast was good. Of course I had to have a big bowl of oatmeal.

The University of Akron now owns the property and the top floors are now student housing--so if having college kids around would bother you this is not the place to stay. I like the energy, so that didn't bother me. My air conditioning unit was a bit noisy and I had an inside balcony and the sound from students in the area down below was pretty loud. I would suggest you request an outside balcony room.

There were train cars and other interesting things on the property but due to arriving fairly late and having to leave early I really didn't get too much time to explore them. If you are someone who enjoys trying unusual accommodations or are interested in history I would highly recommend you book a stay at Quaker Square in Akron, Ohio.

“Tourist Attraction - Maybe?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

My experience was an interesting one. We were looking for something to do in Akron. We literally pulled into a parking garage, got out, and started walking the area. We came upon this hotel around noon and strolled right in. We found the bldg interesting...it looked like six large, older former silos.

The hotel was quiet. With cheesy 1970's decor and carpet. It was creepy quiet. We took off up the ramp by the fancy restaurant. Still not seeing a soul. And we kind of wandered into a train museum. How a "hotel"..."Quaker Oats history"...and old "train cars" have anything to do with each other I still don't know.

We posed with the trains, played with the equipment, read materials and kept strolling.

We came across a closed ice cream parlor, closed bagel place, and closed Trackside restaurant. (Restrooms were conveniently open.) According to the signs everything should have neen open at noon. How long has this stuff been boarded up??

Keep walking down the long hall. You'll run into another section of a dusty, unloved train museum (free) and a bakery where we bought cookies. She said we were her first customers of the day. There is also a gift shop. Which is not consistent. From "Over the Hill" mugs to comic books. Strange. Again - no one but the cashier in there. She told us the 1st three floors of the place are hotel. The next 6 floors are dorms.

Then we found a glass elevator. No one was around so we rode it up and down a few times getting a view of the city. If we got off on a floor we saw more closed restaurants. And a weird, random antique item here and there. Like a wine press. There was just a really odd, abandoned feeling about this place. Helloooo ghost town.

We then retreated, exiting the long maze of shops back to the hotel lobby. Laughing and taking more photos of us with the train stuff. It was like we had the place to ourselves.

Overall - I'm still not sure what I just witnessed. Is this a hotel? Dorm for Akron U kids? A depressing tourist trap? Or, a free museum for field trips?

“Comfortable stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

My husband and I stayed at Quaker Square in July for my birthday. We enjoyed our stay. It is not a new hotel, a little run down, but the price is good. It is in a nice area and very convenient parking. Air conditioner in the room was a little noisy but hotel was very quiet. Great free breakfast with your stay.

“Not such a great place anymore......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

My mother and I traveled to Ohio for some personal business, and I wanted us to stay some place memorable. I remembered this place as a child, but it was not as nice as I had remembered. The rooms were noisy and the heat/air was louder than the traffic outside. They still had listed on their web site they had a pool, but it has been closed for months. This was depressing. Also noticed the shops closed very early leaving little to do here. There were many college students running around the hotel, and although they may have been staying in the hotel, they were loud and obnoxious and nothing was said to them even in the main lobby area. We were not impressed, although the room came at a fair price.

“Don't do it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012 via mobile

Found this place on Trip Advisor. I travel a LOT and thought it would be different to stay in a silo...big mistake.

It's a dormatory and not a nice one at that. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere.
