“Incredible meal and service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

My cousin and I decided to try OWG on our way to Hatteras because we heard about the great views of the water. It was a bit too chilly to eat outside so we just enjoyed the view from the inside. Service was very personable. When we mentioned that we were interested in the burgers, the server suggested we share because of the huge portion size (great idea!). Our burger halves were on separate plates when they came to the table and the two sides we picked were already divided as well. The burger was great, the fries were yummy, and the mac & cheese was to die for...incredible!!!! We couldn't have had a better meal or better service. We ended up with plenty of food, sodas, and dessert for about $25. :)

“I really wanted to like this place...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

Really wanted to try this place when I was down OBX for vacation. The website made it seem hip and cool, with great food options. We arrived to an empty parking lot, never a good sign, but chose to try it anyway. The food was not worth the price, not that it was expensive, but the food wasn't above average at all. We sat outside, the place does have a lovely water view, aslong as you're not distracted by all the bugs crawling around and up the building. The drinks were pretty tasty, the service slow. We decided to go inside once the sun set because the mosquitos were starting to bite. The decor inside was surfer chic with a layer of dust and dirt on top. The chef greeted us, he was friendly, so was everyone who worked there. I hope they can get their act together because the place has potential. Great location. Wouldn't recommend to anyone though.

“The biggest desserts I have ever seen-and good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

This place is the old Costal Blue in north Avon, on the sound, We liked it before so decided to try the new venue. We liked the surfer decor, the surf film playing. Our food was plentiful and good, especially the desserts. Boys had burgers, DH and I had more traditional entrees. Even the ladies room has a sweet decor and good amenities, Good views. Server was a tad odd but the boys thought him an individual and so he was given the stamp of approval as well. Open atmosphere, comfortable seats, HUGE desserts. We ordered two and took some home. They were great about accomodating safe cooking for our son's new shellfish allergy. Perfect casual dining.

“Minor changes for big improvements”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012 via mobile

We went to The Open Water Grill with a group of 10, 7 adults, 3 children.

The waitress was nice but we had to repeatedly ask for things like more water and drinks.

The atmosphere is casual and beachy but the menu wants to be slightly upscale so they have a bit of an identity problem.

I had the mahi tuna and it was good, not great - no complaints. Another good, not great dinner was the brisket. 2 people had the ribeye and both thought they were really great. 2 people had crab pots. Both said they were cooked perfectly but not seasoned well...that they had no taste. One person had the filet mignon and it was cooked well done instead of medium. She should have sent it back but didn't and did not enjoy her meal. The reason she didn't send it back was...

The length of time it took to get our food was ridiculously long!!!! We sat for at least 45 minutes before getting appetizers! Then another 20 to get dinner. They did not serve the dinners together either. Even the kids meals didn't come it first. It's tough for 4, 7, and 9 year olds to wait so long for food!

I agree with the other poster... I really wanted to like this place but as of right now I'd only go there if the wait times were too long at the other well known restaurants in Avon.

“Beautiful sunset view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012 via mobile

My boyfriend and I had a lovely dinner here. We watched the sunset over the sound. The boil pots are delicious. The entire atmosphere is very laid back and fun.
