My husband and I went to Atlantic Beach for an off-season get-away in early December. We pulled into Surfari’s parking lot at 6 pm on a Saturday night, and we were the only car there. THAT should have told us something. We checked out the menu posted outside, and the average was $20 a plate for seafood, which is what we wanted.
We walked in and waited. The bartender sat us in a booth in the main dining area. We both ordered broiled scallops and shrimp with two sides. He wanted a baked potato with his slaw, and was told they don’t have that. He got fries. I ordered broccoli with my slaw. He ordered beer. I asked for a mojito. No go. The beer they could do, but not the mojito. I figured mint being out of season was the reason for that. Fine. That could happen anywhere (?).
Dinner arrived and the scallops were like rubber. I am no gourmet chef by any stretch, but I have broiled frozen scallops that were more tender than what we were served. The shrimp? Meh. The slaw had a weird bitter taste to it (and we live in Eastern North Carolina, so we KNOW what slaw should taste like - and it wasn’t THAT). Sad that I liked the broccoli the best out of ANYTHING on my plate. The cocktail sauce tasted bland, and like it had been thawed and watered down, like the kind you get with those frozen shrimp rings you can pick up at any grocery store.
As for service? Our waitress seemed to want to be nice, and she wasn’t unpleasant, however, the staff that WAS there didn’t seem to really be awake.
On our way there, we ran a possum over in the road, and it’s sad when that and dinner were a toss-up for the lowlight of the day.
Maybe this place is better during tourist season? I don’t know, and I more than likely won’t find out, because when I do go back during the summer months, I will take my money and go where I KNOW the service and food are amazing.
Sorry, Surfari…the only adventure we experienced was in trying to get the scallops chewed.
