“Great!”

Great for rainy days or breaks midday. The visitor center is nice for kids to interact with. Fun to see how life was.

“a great walk back in history...not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

Always recommend this great beach attraction to visitors...understand that it's the 2nd most visited state park in NC. New modern Visitors Center adds a new realm of activity to the park. During the summer, visitors can enjoy different music presentations, usually on Friday nights.

“Interesting bit of history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

I have brought several friends and family who have come to visit Eastern North Carolina to Fort Macon State Park. It is a nice day trip and the State Park is very interesting. I have taken both the guided tour and have walked through alone unguided, each can be very informative in its own way. Fort Macon is set up so you can leisurely stroll through the grounds and activate the various pre recorded commentaries at your own pace. They have several different rooms set up reflecting how life was throughout the years, yes.....some of the mannequins are a bit silly looking, but, the stories told through the recordings can be interesting and informative. They even have some interactive displays that children seem to like and a short movie that you can watch both in the fort itself and a more in-depth video in the visitor center.
The State Park is beautiful, and the new visitor center is quite nice. They have clean bathrooms and a gift shop so you can bring home a precious souvenir or two from your visit. Pack your bathing suits and a lunch and spend the rest of your day on the beach. The parking is free, but it does fill up fairly fast, so you might want to get there a bit early on a beautiful beach day.
Atlantic beach is a busy tourist place during the summer months. People from all over come to the shore to rent beach houses and have fun. There are lots and lots of restaurants in the area, and I am sure you will find something that strikes your fancy and budget.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

Having livid in Baltimore for 40 years, Ft. Macon rivals in it's history and the docents their ability to tell the storys and your ability to walk into the re-constructed rooms of the fort to see the Fort during the diffent periodrs of it's history
