“Great hotel...lacks a personality...”

Stayed for 3 nights in the Kempinski in September 07. You've got to be impressed by the location and the stunning views across to Marmaris in the distance even if it does look a little bleak on the hill top as you drive up to it. The quality and fit-out of this hotel is excellent and the attention to detail is also very good and to be expected across the Kempinski 'brand'. Having struggled to find decent beaches in the area the attraction was a private beach here and we weren't disappointed. The watersports and equipment were very good and very available - but then at £30 for a quick ski around the bay I'm not surprised! The room was stunning with great views and again the design and fit-out was excellent. However, the dining experience was a bit of a non-event. The food in the beach restaurant was fine but you'd expect more for the price - the food in the Viatnamese (I think) restaurant was average at best - I've never had a green thai curry that was so spicy I had to order a few pints of water to help with the experience! But that's just a couple of meals - maybe we just didn't order the right things. The issue with this place for us and why we'd not choose to return is the lack of character and personality. I know it's a big 5-star hotel and not a boutique 10 bed place but I kept looking around for 'departures/arrivals' board in the main area hotel! It felt very 'conferency' and didn't make you feel truely welcome - it was meant to be 80% full but it's so big any atmosphere just gets lost. We'll be back to the smaller hotels in future...!

“Very relaxing place”

Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay

Oct 17, 2007

This is a top hotel and is a very relaxing destination hotel, that is to say once you are there it is sufficiently remote to make eating out etc too much of a hassle unless you hire a car. The pool is amazing, the beach is very nice and the Spa is well worth visiting (you can use a lot of the facilities free of charge).

It is worth repeating what has been said by other reviewers that food and drink are pricey so beware! £10/$20 for a gin and tonic is a good example. Cheapest bottle of wine is 60YTL which is about £27 or $54.

“Wonderful experience.. we are already planning our next trip back”

Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay

Sep 20, 2007

After reading about the hotel in a magazine, we decided to book it as we had never been to Turkey before. Once we had booked it I did hear some bad reports about Bodrum and was quite concerned that we wouldn't enjoy it. Thankfully when we arrived at our hotel all our doubts dissapeared, and were very glad that we had chosen this hotel. The views over the sea are truly breathtaking, the hotel has been designed to make the most of the view as it is built on a cliff and I can honestly say I have never experienced a better sea view. The hotel is very well designed, and rooms are of a excellent standard, we choose a deluxe room which was very comfortable. We had chosen the half board option which we were glad we did, as we could eat in all the restaurants but on a set menu which we were more than delighted with. We did enjoy some lovely wine each evening, which was rather expensive but well worth it. We did meet another couple who said that it was very expensive eating in the restaurants so I would recommend going half board. We found the staff to be extremly pleasant and very helpful . It is a very relaxing place and just what we needed it was like a second honeymoon. Unfotunately the night club was very quiet at this time of year, as we would have enjoyed spending some time in there, but we were the only people that seemed to go there so we went to Blue bar instead. I would really recommend this hotel, it defintely merits its 5* and we will be going back again next year.

“A relaxing holiday”

Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay

Overall very good. Our deluxe room was lovely with a beautiful view of the sea and the facilities were excellent. Just a couple of niggles:
- Aside from the breakfast and the pizzas, the food wasn't very good and was very expensive for what it was.
- The majority of wine on the list was Turkish and simply not very nice. After giving the Turkish wine a good go, my husband ordered a glass of French red (at a ridiculous price) with lunch and it was served chilled, from a bottle which was only a quarter full. The waiter explained it was cold to prevent it from going off. Well it was certainly off, tasting as though the bottle had been opened weeks previously! The waiter reluctantly took it away and we weren't charged for it, but in a five star hotel is it really too much to expect to be able to get a glass of good quality non-Turkish wine with your meal..?
- Staff were nice and helpful, however were over-attentive, lurked while we were eating, constantly asked how our meal was and filled up our water glasses sip by sip - extremely irritating!
- Someone knocked on our door nearly every day to see if everything was OK and to ask if we needed anything. 'To be left alone!' or 'Some peace and quiet!!' sprang to mind!

“Very well done”

The Kempinski was recommended by our travel agent and we were surprised that (a) it was so far away from Bodrum (try a 40 TKL round trip cab) which initially disappointed us, and (b) it was sufficiently comfortable and luxurious that we didn't mind after all.
Unlike the Charisma in Kusadasi, this place is not slick - it is very tasteful and well done. You are in a solid and comfortable room (make it deluxe as standard rooms are really not as nice) with an Aegean view that is quite magnificent. The beach area (via golf cart service) is not much but the restaurants and the hotel are attractive and nicely managed. The lobby is multi-leveled with various restaurants and pool areas. We liked the crowd and felt well cared for. The breakfast was the best we had on the whole trip. There were no other hotels in Bodrum that could come close to this place for amenities and luxury.
