I first visited Torba two years ago, as I was searching for a holiday home. I was stunned by the beauty of this charming fishing village. Although it is only 8km from the buzzing town of Bodrum, and just 38km from the airport, it remains tranquil and upmarket, as local fishing boats bob about alongside luxury yachts and cruisers
The pebbled beach wraps itself around Torba Bay, and the clear blue Aegean sea is fantastic for families wishing to swim or pursue various water sports. Drinks and snacks are available throughout the day on the beach, and there are small shops that sell beach items. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for hire, and some stretches are shaded by eucalyptus trees.
The local "dolmus" (mini bus) operates from 7am until 3pm in the summer at 10 minute intervals, and will take you to and from Torba beach, as well as Bodrum bus station, where you can take buses to other villages on the Bodrum peninsula.
The dolmus drivers are very helpful, and will stop at unscheduled stops if requested. The dolmus costs approx 70p from Torba to Bodrum.
At night, Torba Bay sparkles with candlelight from the upmarket (but not expensive) restaurants, dotted around the bay. Freshly caught fish, meze and a variety of mediterranean food is available. As a vegetarian myself, I have always found lots to eat, pizza, salads,
(pide) thin pizza, pasta,or a selection of meze
Torba is very quiet during the winter months, but comes alive from June onwards with Turkish families and celebrities who have holiday homes here.
There are all-inclusive hotels, that offer value for money, but for those wishing for a more peaceful and private holiday, there are some private villas with pools that are available to rent. I am fortunate to own a villa with private pool, which I will rent, if requested
Torba is North of Bodrum and is surrounded by lush hills and pine forests, which make it a great location for a walking holiday. There are the ruins of an ancient byzantine monastry near the beach.
A family aqua park is just 15km in Ortakent, and horse riding can be found in Turgutreis.
Many artists and writers have been inspired by the stunning landscape that Torba offers.
This sophisticated, traditional village is ideal for young people wanting to relax after a night of partying in the many nightclubs in Bodrum, couples wanting a honeymoon or romantic break, where they can dine on the beach by candlelight in one of the restaurants dotted around the bay, people who enjoy lots of walking, activities and water sports or families who want a self-catering villa and pool for the children
The best way to experience Torba, is to see it for yourself.
If you WANT a location full of ex-pats, fish "n" chips and English breakfasts, then Torba is NOT for you, however if you love mixing with local people and want to feel that you are in Turkey, book a flight, pack your bag and say Merhaba Torba.
