We were left high and dry after the demise of Tapestry and used this site to select our hotel and destination. We looked at many more expensive holidays in Turkey, but on balance decided to opt for the Orion as 90% of the reviews were favourable. Having returned, those 90% of reviews were mainly correct and we had a lovely time.
One review from last year stated that the hotel exchanged traveller’s cheques. When I enquired I was told that this was not the case, but as an example of helpfulness, the proprietor offered to drive me to Gumbet to exchange them. As it turned out there was no need as Alina Travel, near the mosque does.
Rooms are small and clean and the staff are extremely polite and helpful. As others have said, pay your bar bill regularly so as it doesn’t become a surprise. This is not because it expensive but after a few nights it is hard to remember where you have drunk what! There were 2 happy-hours, to catch you before you went out and on return and it was relatively cheap…3.5YTL per EFES (£1.32/pt). BBQ night for less than £10 each was excellent but take some money down so you can tip the belly-dancers.
Many tourists want blood for their money but I think this hotel, for the price is very good. Bunyamin, the proprietor, says that the charge is £7.50 per night per person B&B booked directly. Find anywhere in the UK that offers that, at five times that rate and you would be very hard-pushed! So yes I would recommend the hotel and I would go back. On pick up, it was the only hotel where the staff came to wave you off and shake your hand on departure.
The resort is very restful and the beach is excellent, very gently shelving so you can go out a long way before you find yourself up to the navel. The beachfront restaurants do expect you to use their facilities if you park yourself on their sunbeds all day. We went to Fiesta for 14 days and paid about 30YTL (£12) for soft drinks and a snack lunch per couple. There are lots of excursions on offer, it was we just wanted to rest. It was the end of season when we went but a full day out on a gullet with lunch was only £8. Bodrum is worth a visit for 2YTL on dolmus and only 10YTL to visit the castle…English Heritage would have over a tenner off you to visit something comparable..
Our favourite restaurant was [---], no menu but the owner takes you inside and explains what is on offer and it is excellent. He takes a real pride in his restaurant. Next comes the one two doors down from The Orion, Ortasekerli where the food is very fresh and very reasonably priced. We found some of the seafront restaurants very gimmicky and overpriced. We would have eaten at the hotel but being the end of season, things were winding down.
As for the weather, we had 2 weeks starting 1st October and had 2 cloudy days at 20C , the rest was 30C and above. Came back looking like a lobster!
