First the positives since these can be dealt with more quickly.

The rooms are comfortable and quite well equipped. The room was cleaned and tidied by the friendly chamber maid.

The location is pretty good. It is set at the foot of a hill. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to either Gumbet or Bodrum - this will involve walking up & down the steep hill. Or you can go by boat to Bodrum (this costs 4 lira each way per person which is about £1.60 so could be expensive for families).

The private beach is quite nice and kept tidy (though there is debris in the water).

Some of the bar/outside restaurant staff are cheerful and friendly.

The gardens, pool and public areas are kept clean and tidy.

Now for the negative stuff.

The prices for food and drink, particularly the latter, was exhorbitant. A bottle of water was 3.5 lira. Ordinary shop prices for water tended to be about 1 lira. In fact there is a little shop about 30 seconds walk from the entrance to the hotel which sells it for 1.25lira.

However you are forbidden to bring food and drink into the hotel. There is a sign at the entrance to the hotel in a number of different languages explaining the rule. Your carrier bags will be checked by the security staff when you enter the hotel. They will solemly point to the message and take any food and drink from you. Where it will be kept for your consumption off away from the hotel. Alternative ways of smuggling things in is via the back entrance if you have caught the boat back to the hotel from Bodrum.

The reception staff are not particularly friendly. For a 5 star hotel (where they derive that standard from I don't know cos it aint 5 star!) I would have expected them to have a better standard of English. We wanted to change the room we had been given. For a couple of days they just shrugged their shoulders and said there were no other rooms available and generally pretended not to really know what we wanted. It seemed to us howerver that they were just fobbing us off and hoping we would go away. Eventually they did offer us an alternative room.

There was little information about the hotel. For instance they said nothing about us needing a card from them which would be handed in to a man who would give us our beach towels. Also there was no list of prices for items available from the mini bar.

There was a lot of loud noise at night from neighbouring hotels which might trouble light sleepers - though it tended to stop at around midnight.

Also be careful of the swooping waiters at breakfast. They are swift at removing plates and glasses. If you take your eye off them for a moment they will be taken away.

Overall the hotel is well located, clean and other than the reception staff generally friendly. However what spoilt it for us was not being allowed to bring in our own food/drink which would not be a problem if the prices in the hotel were more reasonable.

However the prices in the hotel seemed reasonable compared with those at Bodrum Airport, which are on an entirley different level altogether. Where a 1.5litre of water in the shops costs around 1 lira, the hotel was 3.5 lira the price in the airport for a 500 ml bottle of water was 6 lira!!! Incidentally a drink poor burger and chips was around 12 lira, which made the prices in the hotel seem reasonable.

“£3 a can of coke!”

Azka Otel

The hotel was nice, the location a bit far from the centre. The rooms were clean and the service average although we would agree with other comments that they to not favour the English. The pools and facilities were good. The biggest problem, the expense. . . . GO ALL INCLUSIVE! If you don't you are forever smuggling in drinks and disposing of the empties (If not they security will take them away or you pay the hotel price for each item found in your room). One can of coke was around £3, a bottle of water around £1.50.

The hotel entertainment was very poor, two turkish nights all week, although the neighbouring hotels seemed to have lots going on to keep you awake all night.

Get a sea view, its worth the extra.

Would stay there again, either after a lottery win or all inclusive.

I was really impressed with Azka Otel, our room was spotless on arrival and was cleaned every day, with fresh bedding and towels also every day. The views over the bay are stunning, it has 2 lovely outdoor pools, as well as it's own private area of beach which is shared with the 2 hotels adjacent to Azka. The location is great, close enough to walk into Bodrum, although there are a lot of steep hills on the way so we chose to catch the bus from the top of the road, which costs just 2 lira (<£1) into Bodrum. The only problem was the food/drink prices in the hotel which were quite steep, and the rather strict security guards at the entrance who wont let you take in any food or drink from outside (hotel rules). However, you can sneak in around the back and straight onto the beach without being challenged! The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and most spoke very good English.

I am not sure what the writer's of the other poor reviews were expecting! No doubt, like us they booked a last minute cheap summer get away, but seemed to expect a lot more!

The hotel is not a five star, why would it be at the price? It's about a beachside 3/4 star. Don't go for the 'all inclusive' as the food is horrible; we booked breakfast only and that was OK. The private beach is fantastic, the views beautiful and it's a great location. There are lots of staff, and it's true they are completly useless when asked a question, but very friendly when telling you they can't help with local info!

Not sure about everyone going on about prices of bottled water etc...1.5ltr is 3.50 YTL and happy hour (5-6) in the seaview bar is a 2 for one deal- gr8 after a day on the beach and before jumping on the water taxi for an evening meal in Bodrum. Our airconditioning worked fine, the view from our room was perfect sea view (and we didn't pay for a seaview!). The belly dancing night was lovely to watch from the seaview bar as well.

The water taxi is brilliant- try and do a day trip to Cos and a dive trip as well; this can be booked from the same place as the water taxi pick up!

I wouldn't go back to the Azka, but not beacuse it was less than I expected. We got what we payed for and were very happy with our decision.

“pleasantly surprised with the Azka”

Azka Otel

We had read some good and some pretty bad reviews on the internet after booking this holiday, but were relieved to find the Azka to be a very pleasant hotel. Everything was very clean and the gardens and pool areas lovely. The only downsides were that the staff could not speak very good English, so it could be a little difficult to communicate at times, and drinks were very expensive. You are not allowed to bring any food or drink into the hotel (not even water) and you might get searched at the entrance and have it confiscated if you try to smuggle anything in! It is, however, possible if you are careful. Also, the food was nothing special and certainly not 5 star standard, but it was passable. Our room was at the top in the annex, where most of those on cheap deals seem to get put, but, although the rooms were nowhere near 5 star standard, they were clean and nice enough. We preferred the annex anyway, as it is situated at the top of the hotel and has it's own pool that those in the main hotel don't use, so it didn't get overcrowded. The hotel is in a lovely position with fantastic views. It is just a short walk along the beach to the ferry boat that takes you into Bodrum. It costs 4 Turkish lira one way and takes about 10 minutes. Boats run to midnight, depending when you go in the season. Gumbet, if you want somewhere a bit more lively in the evening, is a few minutes away by taxi. Outside the hotel there is a green button that you press and in no time a taxi will appear. All prices are displayed and it costs 6 lira to Gumbet. Turgetreis market is held every Saturday and costs about £1.40 one way from the bus station in Bodrum. It's worth a visit, but don't be ripped off or intimidated by the traders who will pressure you to buy and even physically pull you into their stalls/shops. They can get nasty when you don't buy, but if you show them who's boss you'll be okay. If you want any fake designer stuff (and it is all fake) don't pay any more than £2 or 5 lira for Nike/Lacoste t-shirts or £3 to £4 for Chanel etc handbags. Ladies sandals are quite nice, but pay no more than £10 for 3 pairs. Prices at Bodrum airport are extortionate (£4 for small plastic cup of tea or coke and £9 for what we'd get at MacDonalds only far poorer quality) Try to take food with you and don't get ripped off. All in all, lovely holiday in nice hotel in great location.
