Owner description: Much of the city of Patara remains buried in sand, which has helped to preserve many of the ruins. Of particular interest are the Amphitheatre, Necropolis and the monumental gate or Arch of Triumph.

“A Tale of 2 Amphitheatres”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

The ruins at Patara are well worth a visit, even if your primary objective is the incredible beach nearby. Even for eyes that might be a bit jaded by one too many visits to ancient sites in this area of Turkey, this site makes an indelible impression, mainly due to the two amphitheatres that were built within a stone's throw of each other. The larger of the two is a splendid example of these mysterious, abandoned structures that punctuate the whole of the Turkish coastline. The evocative decay of this theatre, which witnessed spectacles we can now only imagine, is juxtaposed with the smaller amphitheatre's clean-cut splendour, having undergone a sympathetically realised restoration job. It's not difficult to feel transported back in time sitting here.

“Amazing ruins, very few tourists”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013 via mobile

If you are staying in Patara, buy the beach card for entry which allows you several days of visits for your family. The cost was only 7.5 TL only 1.5x the cost of one adult admission. This gets you access to ruins and beach. Budget at least a few hours for the ruins, they cover a large area and are very interesting. Don't miss the lighthouse which is a bit of a walk from the main ruins site. Great bird watching in the area as well, can spot some egrets in the swamp if you are lucky :)

“Lots to Explore and Climb On”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

A large crumbling theater, a well-restored council hall, a striking colonnaded street ending underwater in a swamp, tombs, an impressive, lonely arch, one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, a mostly collapsed fortress: these ruins are my second favorite in the area behind Tlos. They are only partly excavated and fully free for exploration which adds to the fun as it seems about half of the city is still lost in the sand dunes and brush. Supposedly there was an Oracle here second only to the one in Delphi, but I didn't manage to find it. Regardless, worth the trip and only a 4 out of 5 because there wasn't any one thing here that had that "wow" factor.
