“OK for a night or two”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2011

I stayed in one of the Deluxe Rooms - pretty small and basic. The room was on the top floor and the lift sounded like it was on its last legs and was not working on the morning I left. It was OK as a budget room for one night but I wouldn't fancy staying there much longer. Bar downstairs was pleasant and friendly though.

I agree with the previous extensive review.
Furthermore, some rooms are fairly old looking, some have no window, some are to the front with heavy traffic, and some have very thin walls. And the pillows seem very old!
But rooms have a safe, and there is free wifi in the bar.

This is an update to my original review of 15MAR09. I stayed here one night, 19NOV10, as I was in town visiting friends and doing some early holiday shopping.

==> The Hotel / Location
This is a small-ish limited-service budget hotel and has only some 25+ rooms spread over 5 floors. It’s owned and run hands-on by an Australian national so there is a nice “Aussie” look and feel to it. It’s located on M.H. Del Pilar Street just about 100m east of UN Avenue and two blocks north of Roxas Blvd. It’s also a very short 7 minute walk to the US Embassy also located on Roxas Blvd. The location is, in my opinion, one of the big selling points to it.

Nearby are several fast food (Wendy’s Hamburgers) chain outlets as well as several local sit-down bar and restaurants. There is also a 7-11 (24 hr. convenience store) located just steps from the front door. The hotel does have a small bar with TV and serves food, but it is not 24hours. As such, you have several good alternatives to find food or drink options nearby.

You are only about a :15 to :30 taxi ride away from the MNL airport (depending on traffic) and there are frequent jeepney and taxis running on Del Pilar or adjacent UN Avenues, so in-city transport is very convenient. The elevated rail system (LRTA) has a station nearby, so you can easily access other parts of the greater metro Manila area.

The ground floor houses the main front desk/reception and the small bar/pub with pool table. All the rooms are located on the 2nd to 5th floors. Since this is a limited-service hotel, there is no pool or other type amenities.

One nice feature about the hotel is that it is the starting point for the Southern Cross Shuttle, which is a privately run dedicated-use shuttle bus service that goes between Manila and Angeles City, up north in the Pampanga province. The bus leaves from right in front of the hotel and ends at the Brass Knob Hotel in Angeles City. Reservations and tickets can be bought at the reception. It’s a non-stop bus- they don’t pick-up passengers enroute- and only available to those who have booked via the Southern Cross or Brass Knob hotels.

==> Lobby / Check-in:
The front desk clerk received and completed my check-in rather quickly; completing the registration form in just a few minutes. I was given room on the 4th floor. I used the small 3-person half-sized elevator to get me and my roller bag to the 4th floor.

==> Room:
My room had been recently re-furbished since my last visit in March of 2009. The walls were freshly re-painted in lighter pastel colors and some of the fixtures had been replaced and looked new.

It was furnished with a queen/double bed—the mattress being on the firm side, which is common for Asia. It was topped with at lightweight comforter and two pillows. There was also an overhead oscillating fan as well as a wall/window-mounted AC unit. The remote-control TV was a standard tube-style TV with all local channels as well as several English language movie channels.

It was also furnished with a stand-up closet for clothes and bags; a mini-refrigerator; and a small work desk/table top.

==> Bathroom:
The bathroom is simple and functional, but more than spacious enough for one. It was equipped with a stand-up shower, toilet and wash-basin and mirror. The hot water ran reasonably hot and had acceptable water pressure. They furnished all towels and soap but no other toiletries.

==> Hotel facilities and Amenities:
Since this a limited-service hotel, there really is very little in the way of true “amenities” per se. They do have a pub/bar/restaurant on the first floor- just adjacent to the front desk area. You can play pool, watch sports on the television or get a drink or even eat your meal there. The menu is decent in terms of selections- both Filipino as well as Western/International- and some of the dishes are rather good. But, since you are in such a prime location, feel free to walk to any number of the very good nearby eateries.

==> SUMMARY:
I really do like this hotel for several reasons, while the hotel is really a low/no-frills hotel, it’s clean, secure and safe. The overall location is very, very good with a number of key things within easy walking distance or a short taxi, jeepney or LRT ride away. The hotel staff are always pleasant and willing to help. It’s not so big of a hotel that it’s impersonal—you know the staff and the staff knows you too.

The rates here are hard to beat—I paid PHP1,200 nett as a returning guest for a one-person basic room. Any other hotel in the area would have been at least twice to three times the price. Granted, most of the other hotels are full-service hotels, but if you don’t need or want all the ‘bells and whistles’ like a pool, business center, etc, then this is great way to get a good clean basic no-frills room and without paying unnecessarily high rates for it.

==> PROS:
An excellent location with restaurants, bars, stores all within easy walking distance. It is safe, secure and an overall clean facility. The staff are personable and try to do what they can to look after you. Rooms are furnished reasonably well given the “level” of this hotel. Rates here are excellent and very hard to beat for what it is (no-frills) and where it is (central Ermita)

==> CONS:
If you need or want the typical full-service amenities, then this hotel is not for you. The area can have a less-than desirable ‘look’ to it, but that’s a part of the overall neighborhood and not indicative of the hotel itself. Some noise from the nearby UN Avenue is detectable if your room faces that direction.

Stayed there for a three days then went to Angeles City fro two weeks and returned there for three more days.

Great value for the money. Good transportation available to Angeles City and return. Room was great, service fantastic, good food, enjoyed the live music and great staff and customers.Very talented pool players. Reception personnel were very friendly and helpful.

I have stayed at other hotels but prefer the Southern Cross. Very safe while you are there. Great location to visit historic sites and Robinson Shopping Center is very close.

I highly recommend this hotel if you want a no frills good safe, clean place to stay.

I havent stayed anywhere else in Manilla and I've read here that the overall acommodation there is not great - so I dont have other Manilla hotels to compare this to. However for us the Southern Cross was a poor experience. The room itself was of course budget looking and a bit tatty - but that's what we expected. There's a bar downstairs that we had a few beers in - it was fine, a pool table and didnt feel unsafe..but I would say half the customers there were western guys with local girls. But when our neighbour came in at 1am and turned the TV on full blast it was like being in the same room as them. We knocked on their door and asked them to turn it down, but even when they did a little it was still very loud due to the thin walls and the TV being positioned on the same wall our heads were against. In the morning, the staff only agreed to a 10% discount as compensation. The overall experience wasn't nice.
