It's an iconic location - the most bombed place on earth (with conventional heavy explosive weapons), the setting for the stage management of the War in the Pacific. "I shall return ...." (but if I don't, I'll rewrite the script).
If only the lessons of history were learned, and wars fought by those who start them......
The japanese are getting it right - remember the tragedy at the human scale, remember that the death of any combatant is a cause for regret. They only follow orders. And risk death in doing so.
Unfortunately nowadays the people with fascination of War are usually those with no experience of its misery, so this monument is in decline, which is good as its time has passed.
