“My Stay In Sofitel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

My room was upgraded to Luxury when I came to stay in Sofitel Philippine Plaza overnight last February 21. Everything was in order, I couldn't have asked for more. Dining at the Spiral is something one should do, food and service are just great!

Okay, Sofitel is a five-star resort hotel. Got that. The prices are high, but the service is good, and the pool is amazing. Spiral, the in-house restaurant is a class all of its own, with different cuisine stations, a cheese room (my favourite!), and flowing chocolate fountains and an endless supply of little desserts. But that said, here are some reasons why it would be better to enjoy the facilities, then move on:

(1.) You can't bring in outside food. You even have to sign a legal document stating that you won't. Now the hotel has an excellent buffet restaurant, Spiral, which I love to pieces. However, Sofitel is quite far from any restaurant or mall— you need a cab to get to the nearest one, which is MOA. That said, unless you plan on splurging at Spiral your entire stay or worse, ordering room service at heart-stopping prices, you are liable to double your bill and your waistline in a few days' time. And the security people actually do check your stuff to see whether you're bringing food in so no sneaky business!

(2.) No free WiFi. Seriously, Sofitel, you're a five-star hotel. You're better than that.

(3.) The library is much smaller/ nearly gone. This is a personal sticking point as I've stayed at this particular Sofitel a number of times now and I love the little corner "library" they have in their lobby. But now it's less of a library and more of a glorified magazine stand, with books just there to add to the lobby decor.

(4.) The rooms aren't really anything to speak about. They're clean, yes, but not opulent. I don't see the justice in paying so much for something average.

(5.) The Manila Bay view is the same whichever water-facing hotel you stay at. So you might as well get one near some restaurants, which will let you order in, and that has free WiFi!

... unless you're just staying for a night, in which case, go mad!

Dear Valued Guest,

Bonjour! Mabuhay from Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila!

We are delighted to hear that you’ve enjoyed Spiral and the cheese room. With regards to your comment on the food form outside, our guest’s wellbeing and safety is one of our top priorities. Indeed our security is tight but it is for our guest’s own welfare as we otherwise cannot control the food hygiene standards. However, we regret that you encountered some challenges with this.
Regarding your comment on the room, we have taken serious note of your comment and we are currently looking into the plane on how to renovate them.

Once again, thank you very much for choosing to stay at Sofitel, and we look forward to being of service to you in your next visit to Manila

Kind Regards,

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We booked 2 standard rooms here for a post-Valentine retreat. For a five star hotel, the rooms are very basic-nothing luxurious or impressive. We were given rooms on the 4th floor which appeared to be recently renovated - new work desk and office chair, a flat screen TV and newly tiled bath with new fixtures (rainshower). The rooms were very clean. The beds are very comfortable. The temperature in the rooms were just right. The room had very poor sound insulation. As the rooms open up to a balcony, the sliding doors do little to sound proof the room from the noise outside. Our room was above an events pavilion which had a party the night we were there. We could hear the loud music late into the night. On the upside, the room did provide us with a wonderful view of the bay.

After check in, we headed to the pool for a swim. The hotel boasts itself as being the only resort-hotel in the metro. They have a beautiful lagoon pool by the bay. The children enjoyed the pool. The pool had water slides for older children (12 years old and above) and a wading area for the young ones. A small playground was available as well. Aside from the pool, the hotel does have a Kid’s club program offering various activities for a fee. Gymboree, a learn and play gym for little kids, is also located inside the hotel. My boys had fun with the Aqua Golf (P400 for a box of 40 floating balls) while my little girl and I fooled around with the mini golf (P450 for 2 putters and 2 balls for 2 hours).

We had dinner at Spirals. Expensive but well worth the splurge especially if you are an Accor Advantage Club member. I could say that I have not had any other hotel buffet dinner that could top Spirals. It could get really busy so booking a reservation especially if you are dining as a group is a must. The “cheese room” is my favorite area -- I love cheese! Walk ins are good if you are there before 6:00 PM. Even with a full house, you won’t feel like you are in a market because there are a lot of different stations to choose from. Don’t miss the Foie gras station (almost across the Cheese room).

Hubby and I booked the “Duo” couple’s massage (P6,000) at Le Spa after dinner. It was a 3 hour package with 1.5 hours to use the facilities in the couple’s room (steam bath and a deep soak tub) and 1.5 hours for the massage itself. The package includes a bottle of Asti Martini and chocolates. Our masseuses, Melai and Rose, were very good! Their strokes were fluid and relaxing. Bad idea to do it after dinner in Spirals though - we both had to fight the urge to throw up while they were exerting pressure on our backs! Hubby was snoring loudly shortly after they made him lie belly up. I never fall asleep during a massage but for the first time, I was so relaxed that I was able to drift to sleep. Reservations also a must if you want to book the couple’s room. Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before your reservation.

Our booking came with breakfast at Spirals. Again, we were faced with a lavish spread of breakfast choices that will make it hard for other hotels to compete with. You can help yourself the unlimited glasses of champagne for breakfast buffets during the weekend. On a busy day, be sure to be there not later than 8:00am or you will most likely have to queue for a table.

We were expecting a lot of people during check out as there were two big conventions going on when we were there. The hotel is very strict about their check out time at 12NN. They make you sign an agreement that you will be charged P1,000 per hour after 1:00PM. We settled our bill early to avoid the queue and just informed front desk that we will turn in our room keys when we leave by 12NN. True enough, when we left by 12NN, the check out counters were starting to get chaotic.

Although check in was quick, we had an issue when we were verifying the room package that we booked with breakfast. We were able to grab a good deal on a room that includes breakfast for 2 plus one free breakfast for a child <12yrs old. It was clearly stated when I booked online. Knowing that hotels have different policies with regards to their charges for children and having my share of disappointments on how hotel staff were not consistent with hotel policies, I confirmed the free breakfast for our little girl over the phone. It’s a good thing I got the name of the lady I spoke to because during our check in, when I reconfirmed with front desk, they tell me that they charge children below 12 for half rate.

According to the lady who assisted us during check in, their system does not state that the package included free breakfast for children <12. When she saw that I had written down the name (and even date and time) of the lady who confirmed that breakfast for one child <12 will be FOC, she took note of it on the system for us. So better read all the details and inclusions of your package or even better if you can print out the details. My boys were not happy that the hotel did not have free wifi access when most hotels now are offering it for free. Maybe they should consider this as an added benefit. A free shuttle bus to Mall of Asia (the closest Mall to the hotel) is available but the time and frequency of the shuttle was not enough to render it useful. The hotel is not within good walking distance to a mall or other eating options. They do not allow bringing bought food in and food delivery (you are even asked to sign an agreement for this! For them it’s a food safety issue?!? ). We had no qualms about this since we were just there for a night. Imagine if you are there for several nights. I wouldn’t want to eat in Spirals every single day even if I had the money to shell for it. I don’t want to be as huge as an elephant upon check out!

TIP - Request for a room with the view facing Mall of Asia if you stay covers a Saturday night up to the 23rd of March. There is an International Pyromusical Competition going on at 7PM. You will be able to view the fireworks from your room. If you want to watch the event from Mall of Asia, be sure to head there really early as traffic gets really bad because of that event. Stay put in the hotel until after the show if you do not want to be caught in traffic.

Room Tip: Request for rooms with the view of the bay and rooms on higher floors.
