“A Fine Place in Ermita”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

Let me start by saying I like this place. So, you know at the beginning that I'm going to praise it. I think its hospitality is its greatest charm. It is pretty affordable, and you're not going to get the amenities of a 5-star hotel, but you know that going in, right?

I happen to be an Ermita bum, and I know all the places in the area (i.e. Swagman, Slouch Hat, Southern Cross, Sandico Apartelle, the old Black Stump, Amazonia, etc). I have stayed in 'em all. I would have to rate the rooms at the Duck Inn as perhaps better than them all. Now, the amenities are spartan, but the rooms are clean and I never got that "creepy" feel that I have in some other budget inns. I have always got a room with a window, because frankly without a window I feel like I am on a Navy ship. Anyway, again, the rooms are clean although simple and spartan.

Know what? It's the ambience of the place that really sells it. The bar/restaurant area is about as hospitable as it gets. I have never met an employee there with a sour puss attitude. They all act like they have the best jobs on earth. The door guys treat you as a valued customer every time you come in. You just feel like you're coming home to your friends when you walk into the place.

Good food is served here. Never had a bad meal, or even a so-so one. The fried rice is excellent, as is the chicken adobo. The tables abut the pool tables so you can watch folks playing pool as a diversion. Or, you can watch the nice large screen televisions which predominantly play Aussie rugby (I can't figure the game out, I'm American), news, or live rock musical concerts from the 80s...very good.

I kinda consider the Duck Inn to be a port in a storm, as it is a haven off the streets of chaotic MH del Pilar and all the hustle and bustle in the area. Its hospitality, charm, and friendly atmosphere sell it. Again, the rooms are nothing exceptional, but they are clean and basic enough. I gotta mention that getting to these rooms by the rather steep staircase can be kind of laborious, especially if you've had a few to drink. Just remember to put on your navigator hat before ascending it.

I'll give it 5 stars as a budget location, for sure.

Room Tip: Get a room with a window, even though it may be noisy.

Good clean rooms with air conditioning and a lot of the extras you'd expect in a lot more expensive hotels. The staff are friendly and helpfull. It really is the place to stay if you're on a budget. Good inexpensive western food. Less than 30 mins from the airport. Close to the American Embassy. Run by a lovely Filipina (Racle) and her Australian husband (Doug Green) who apparently used to play Aussie Rules. ;-)
Good sports bar as well - the place to watch sports of all sorts.

This hotel is an old smelly place and be sure - it does not smell like flowers.
At booking they ask you if you wish a non-smoker room. Be carefull! "Non-smoker" room means only a tiny room which has not a window neither a ventilation, so you have to open the door to the stairs, hoping to get some fresh air, but you only get the cigarette smoked air from the bar downstairs.
Only after my protests after 2 days they gave me another room, with a window. This window was build in into the roof, so you couldnt see the street - only the first 3 meters of their roof.
The stuff was kind of friendly, but only sometimes. One women from reception was almost rude - never answered on greetings and NEVER used the words like "hello, thank you, sorry, you are welcome". The favorite word - just a simple "NO!". One of the security guards was very rude to my guest, who did not have the ID card at this evening, although she showed it to him the evening before! I suppose, it was the way to get some tipp from me.
The whole interior, furnitures, chairs in the bar and snooker-table are at least 20-25 years old, they need at least to clean them, so it wouldnt stink so strong in the building.
I smashed 3 cocroatches on the 4 days I spent there.
I will never stay again in this location and would not reccomend it to somebody else.

Room Tip: - dont take the Non-smoker room - its the name for the room without any window!

Rooms are very small but good enough if you are just transiting Manila. I only stayed 1 night, and seen as it is a pub it got a little noisy at about midnight. The food in the pub was good and the live music was good aswell. It is in a rough area of Ermita for pick pockets and the like so be very careful when you walk around. Overall, a good budget hotel.

Decent accomodation in the heart of all the action.
A suite will run about US$35.00. The place is a little old and needs updating but it definitely is clean. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Food is good, reasonably priced, and is available 24hrs.
Girl friendly. No questions asked. No joiner fees.
Any rooms with a window tend to receive a lot of noise from outside.

Room Tip: The quietest rooms are the nonsmoking rooms as they do not have any windows to let in the noise from...
