“Nice staff but busy location.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Arrived at noon had to wait for a room, the person before us got taken to his room and rejected it because it was to small, then our room was ready straight away, we suspect the rejected room but as we were only staying two nights we accepted it, the room was not user friendly, the colors in the rooms which were bright oranges, greens etc with white seemed very 70's, the bathroom was very good big with a great shower. We had dinner in the restaurant were breakfast is served and it was a good meal with great service, we went up to the roof bar and found that had a restaurant up there so booked for the next day for 7pm, We couldn't get on our table and by the time we did the thunderstorm arrived, down to the conference room as the restaurant below had a private function, ended in disaster eventually get the food the starter and the main brought together, they took the main away then we find the starter is cold, so taken away and supposedly redone came back greasy and only warm so paid for the drinks that we had just got and walked out, really bad experience. The university and other colleges are around the area so we found lots and lots of students around so finding seating in restaurants is not easy and they stay for a long time, walking the fort wall was good, if we went back to Manila we would not stay here again.

We had a fabulous stay at the bay leaf hotel.
The staff are polite and efficient and will go out of their way to help you. The hotel is in a great location for exploring Intramuros and has an amazing roof bar with panoramic views. We visited the roof bar during the day and were pleased that we did as it was closed on the evening due to heavy rain. The room we had was nice with a modern feel and overlooked the golf course.
Just a couple of minor negatives...
Breakfast was average with not much choice. I also did feel that the butter for the toast needed to be placed near the toast and not near the omelette station, or even put 2 dishes of butter out!! I gave up looking for it and eventually asked where it was! The rooms were lacking a few of the usual toiletry extras. A spare toilet roll, pen/paper, facial tissues and shower hat would have been useful.
Aside from this, I really want to mention the fabulous staff again. Kim on the reception and Z Y Manzano really deserve to be commended and are a credit to the bay leaf. Thanks to them for everything they did to ensure that we had a fantastic stay at the bay leaf.

I wanted so much to like this hotel but on balance, that really isn't possible. It is not cheap and I expected at least 4 star service for the price but sadly that is not what I experienced. Perhaps a list of Pros and Cons will illustrate:

Pros

- Location! Excellent for exploring Intramuros, great views.
- Polite staff - always a smile and greeting
- Comfortable soft beds, unlike the hard ones in many Asian hotels
- Good walk in shower
- About 100 TV channels (although quality of picture poor on some)
- Civilised check out time of noon
- Complimentary wi fi
- Excellent rooftop bar for a sundowner

Cons

- Organised a car to pick me up at the airport on 0500 arrival 3 months before my trip. On arrival, no sign of the car. Had to get airport staff to phone hotel etc and wait 40 minutes.
- Rooms in need to serious refreshment: could not decide if they were original 1976 or modern copies!
- Waited 20 minutes to be asked if I would like coffee at breakfast on day 1, then another 15 minutes for no coffee and had to flag another staff member and ask again.
- No butter unless you ask for it and then frozen!
- Had to request that they refill the bread basket for making toast - three times - before I could actually make some, as it was empty
- Pastry warmer on day 2 not turned on so all pastries cold
- Only 2 cereal varieties
- No bacon
- Only jam (one kind) or marmalade - no peanut butter, no honey, no nutella etc and no butter
- Room not properly clean - tile grout grimy, floor drains grimy, shower soap tray had cigarette burns (rooms are non smoking but clearly not always)
- Socket plates yellowed, splotched with paint and in some cases not properly seated to wall
- Vivid orange walls in room not even slightly relaxing!
- Breakfast on day 2 the staff were even less attentive than day 1. Maintenance was cleaning windows during breakfast service, no manager present
- Door to room had half inch gap all the way round so all corridor noise was easily audible and heaps of light comes in at night - had to put towel at bottom of door!
- Room doors require manual shutting with a loud bang, so as people come in and go out in your floor, you can hear doors slamming left right and centre
- TV's in adjacent rooms easily audible and annoying when trying to sleep

This hotel could be fabulous but it needs a full ground up refers and some serious management attention to detail to suit western visitors I would suggest. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

I would highly recommend visiting the hotel, and especially the roof top bar. A great 360 view of the city at night that over looks the golf course, city hall, and other sites around Manilla. Friendly service, good food and reasonable prices as well!

Awesome Staff, kind, very helpfull and professional.
Awesome Rooftop 360° Terrasse, lounge spirit for a peacefull drink or diner, with amazing view.
Staid in this property at the beginning of my trip in Philippines, and decided to come back one more night at the end, as we really enjoy and it's a really good value for money.
Just enjoy: starting the day with a Breakfast served in the restaurant with amazing view and end it by a drink or diner on the rooftop terrasse.

Located in the historic, walled former city center that is witnessing a renovation and revival, The Bayleaf was a definite refuge after busy days in the City. Clean, Well-Designed, with a nice breakfast and wonderful view (the rooftop bar also is great for a sunset drink). This was our first time in the Philippines, so weren't quite sure where to stay, but we were oh so glad we chose this hotel. While some other hotels are located in either over commercialized areas (i.e. Could be Anywhere in the world), others, after seeing them in person, were... not so inviting. Bayleaf is literally surrounded in history. You can take a tricycle or carriage tour directly outside the hotel, and the rest of the city is just a few minutes away, by taxi or metro.

Room Tip: Make sure to request a room with a window (some do not have any)

I have stayed at The Bayleaf for a month now. My colleague and I are living in the Philippines for a business trip. I have been to over 20 countries all around the world, 4 different continents, and over 50 hotels - THIS HOTEL IS THE BEST. It is beautiful and stands out in the city even as you drive toward the walls of Intramuros. The hospitality is amazing from the door people who smile at you as soon as you walk up to, to the front desk help who always address you by your name and with a genuine cheer. The food in the 9 Spoons restaurant is eclectic, fresh, and delicious. My favorite part of the hotel is the SkyBar on top of the roof. It has a 360 degree view of the Manila city skyline and the famous Manila Bay Sunset. The hotel is also strategically located in a great part of the city. Surrounded by historical sites that are in walking distance OR you can jump on a horse drawn private carriage tour for 350 pesos that the hotel will go fetch you. Also - shopping is important in Manila! SM Mall is a 5 minute walk away. And Mall of Asia is a 10 minute taxi ride. Definitely stay here if you are in Manila! Intramuros is the best part of town to stay in if you are a tourist.
