Bistro Remedios was recommended in one of our guidebooks as a good place to go for Filipino food. I, however, would not recommend it for anything other than their truly excellent plain rice.
The atmosphere, as you enter, is quite pleasant. The staff is nice and the extensive and varied menu looks promising at first. It is not the cheapest place around but one hopes that with all those fancy dish names she/he would not be paying for nothing...
I'm a vegetarian, but the friend I dined with is not. She ordered some fish, rice and a green mango salad: the fish, according to her, was tasteless, the mango salad wasn't good and had shrimp sauce in it (which the menu didn't mention) and the rice, well, the rice was very good. I went for two dishes from the 'Vegetables' section of the menu. I picked them based on their descriptions in the menu: no meat-y, fish-y, shrimp-y ingredients. When they were served and I tasted the first dish, it obviously had shrimp sauce (which I'm allergic to); the second dish was supposed to be two aubergines wrapped in an omelette - well, also wrapped in that omelette was minced meat (which the menu, again, didn't mention). Thus, my friend and I had to just split the rice. When I complained to the waitress about my dishes being different from the ones I ordered based on their description in the menu, she just shrugged her shoulders and didn't even offer an apology.
Overall, the place is not too bad if you're an adventurous diner, impervious to surprise stuff in your food. If, however, you like to know what you're having, don't go to Bistro Remedios - there are plenty of better (and cheaper) places around.
