We booked this hotel for two nights to see the Island of Mahe after visiting one of small quiet islands. In all honestly I booked it because it looked the best choice at a price that wasnt what i considered to be ridiculous like alot of the other options were.
Not a great start, checking in was a complete pain, the guy on reception (when he eventually arrived) didnt seem to know what he was doing and couldnt find our booking. Definately a laid back attitude, customers are not the be all and end all! Eventually sorted, we were show to room 9 on the first floor. Room okayish BUT there were iron bars on all the windows, what a greeting and one wondered why the security..???.. The room next door had a lovely terrace area with furniture (right outside one of our iron barred windows just to rub it in!) but this was already booked. I asked at reception if there was another room- a Deluxe which I had booked that we could swap. The hotel was full, and our room was Deluxe(?!?). There are a couple of other rooms with sea views that are SUPER Deluxe, Foiled by their description! Anyway, the bathroom was very large, the restaurant at the hotel serves very good Indian food (service slightly random) and there's the most amazing snorkelling at the beach at the bottom of the road which made up for the other problems. The town of Anse Royal has a slightly provincial feel to it, with a lot of locals living in the area, some looking more salubrious than others- cans of beer in hand etc etc, which made us wonder about the iron bars and security at the hotel....Heyho.
We hired a car for the day and toured the Island which is a must, some amazing beaches even though the one main road runs by them all (doesnt show you that in the brochures and watch out for the drop and ditch by the side of roads when driving, could be very dangerous!)and we had a very memorable day out, fruit sellers by the side of the roads are good in the heat, and frequent stops on the beaches. Downside, if you can be picky on a tropical Island!- not many cold drinks stops or cafes, only bigger hotel bars which are usually secure complexes, and we didnt find the capital Victoria particularly attractive.
All in all a very interesting couple of days, not deluxe but does it matter- just Snokel! The beautiful coral and fish filled warm waters are the same whatever you've paid.
