“Clean Hotel, Great Beach, the Details Need Help”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW

Our room was clean and we had a nice upstairs balcony which offered more privacy than the first floor rooms. We enjoyed the hotel, it could be better in certain areas (detailed below), but we were happy to find something nicer in a decent price range (tough in the Seychelles).

Shower:
Very awkward with no privacy. You must step up a full 2.5 feet to get in the shower/Tub combo and you are essentially standing in the middle of the room washing yourself. This is when having an upstairs room comes in handy. The shower is a rain shower which is great, but there is no curtain, no door, nothing. It is the strangest setup I have ever seen. The hotel should convert half the rooms into shower only rooms. Not everyone needs a tub. This would allow an all glass shower to be installed in the corner and function better. I was 6 months pregnant while at the hotel and found climbing in and out of the shower difficult and dangerous (it gets slippery). They provide step to help guests into the shower, but you still must hoist yourself over the shower edge.

Food:
The food and beverage manager is incredibly nice! It seemed like he was always working. Breakfast was fantastic! Food prices were high, but that is the norm in Seychelles. If the drinks were slightly less, we probably would have ordered a lot more so I’m not sure they are doing themselves any good. In general, I’m not a huge buffet fan unless I’m in Vegas or at a 5-star hotel. They are just never that great and the buffet at Avani is no different. We were definitely glad that we didn’t pay for the half-board! There is also a Thai restaurant on the premise which had the best food. We were disappointed that every single lunch offered was buffet. We avoided this by ordering from the pool menu, but the buffets in general (lunch or dinner) were over-priced and poor quality. Also, the hotel gives out delicious popsicles when checking in. We asked to buy some one afternoon and they wouldn’t sell us any or give us any. We walked to the left of the hotel to a petrol station and bought some, but we found it odd that the hotel wouldn’t have those available after check-in.

Pool/Beach:
The pool isn’t great for children. The shallow end is still VERY deep. Also, the wood around the pool gets very hot during the day. They have no signs warning of this. We watched numerous people get surprised by the scalding temperatures and burn their feet. The beach was clean and very relaxed/private. The swimming area is off to the right of the property and best when the tide is down. The hotel could easily improve the beach by raking it each morning and disposing of the seaweed. Before Avani we stayed at a 5-star property on another island and this made a huge difference in the appearance of the beach.

Internet:
I was hopeful based on hotel comments at the Internet problems had been resolved. We found the Internet to be painfully slow and we couldn’t get any work done. I complained to the reception about this and was transferred to an IT person who quickly gave me a different, faster Internet code which worked great. Why isn’t this code the one always given out? The slower speed Internet worked ok on our phones, but we couldn’t open any web pages on our laptops until we switched to the high speed.

Overall:
The hotel has a lot of potential. The layout is great, it reminded us of the retro hotels in Palm Springs built in the 1960s. If the hotel works a bit harder at the details it will be excellent. The bath products are cheap, the beach could be cleaner, and the hotel said that the water wasn’t safe to drink, but they only give two small bottles a day – cheap. The hotel is out of the way from much, we only had 3 full days at the property and all we wanted was to lay by the pool/beach and relax so this suited us fine. However, if you want to explore the island, definitely rent a car because taxis are expensive. We found the staff to be incredibly nice and accommodating and incredibly nice.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room near the pool

On arrival the reception was perfect. Guests were escorted to comfotable oceanside rooms efficiently and it was the little things that matter like the sleep well pillow on the bed . Situated on an idyllic beach with two restaurants and spa, the guests are left to their own devices and enjoy privacy, The Concierge is Mr Personality Plus a genial islander with a smile the size of his 10 gallon hat. Arguably a 4 star hotel with 6 star service. Guests were made to feel part of the family and this property has an ambience and warm feeling about it without equal on the island. Recommended for both short and long stay and the management really do care. Special thanks to the front office ladies who are superwomen. B=Noted that Etihad crews stay here so they must know something is good right!

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and go for upstairs room which get great views

We traveled here on 1st week of April for our honeymoon. The hotel is a new one, I think management got changed on Mar 15. Full marks to the new Avani management at all parameters. The staff is very fantastic!!! From the bartenders to the housekeeping to the hotel manager and the receptionist.

Location-
As the hotel is situated on the west side of Mahe so you need a car hire. The hotel situated at a nice quiet location of the island. To visit, the best beaches of Mahe, you definitely need to have a car.

Rooms-
The check in process was smooth. There was a free upgrade to beach view room. The room was quite good, specious.

Restaurant-
There is a restaurant open 24/7 which serves continental food. The breakfast served till 10:30 am full of all varieties. The staff is really caring. In one instance, they specially prepared a vegetarian meal for my wife as she was a vegetarian and did not charge for the same.

Beach-
There is a private beach but beacuse of rocks sparing few areas, you cant swim. But the beach is quite long and scenic.

One area for improvement: On a rainy day, there were too many flies. There was no insect rapper which was a need of the momment. Also need serve more verieties of veg food at the resturant.

One good thing which we noticed that Hotel's GM Manish was interacting with almost all the visitors for the feedback. Appreciated.

Room Tip: Beach view rooms are better.

We stayed from the 29 April - 01 May 2015 after 4 nights on Praslin. Avani was re-opened on the 14 March 2015, previously a Le Meridien property.
Even though newly taken over by Avani, the amenities are excellent, delicious food with staff who are ready to go the extra mile.
The pool is huge with a very deep end that is clearly marked. The beach is beautiful but rocky.
Our spa experience was amazing.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms have amazing views and are well located.

Great place. Amazing people. Awesome food. This was my second stay at this beautiful property and will be looking forward to go back there again. Biggest compliments to the Chef and the entire team food was just fantastic. The only Thai restaurant on the island, called Tamarind is fantastic, highly recommended.

Very pleasant stay, rooms are spacious and very well maintained, room cleaning is done twice. Buffet-meals are of very high standard. Location is simply extraordinary, clean and spacious beach with beautiful sealife in the bay. Very large pool, also well maintained. Staff is very helpful and easy to deal with. Car rental on the spot, and after a tour around the island, we felt fortunate to return to the peace and quiteness of AVANI, rather than the busy beach-area in the north.
