Our room was clean and we had a nice upstairs balcony which offered more privacy than the first floor rooms. We enjoyed the hotel, it could be better in certain areas (detailed below), but we were happy to find something nicer in a decent price range (tough in the Seychelles).
Very awkward with no privacy. You must step up a full 2.5 feet to get in the shower/Tub combo and you are essentially standing in the middle of the room washing yourself. This is when having an upstairs room comes in handy. The shower is a rain shower which is great, but there is no curtain, no door, nothing. It is the strangest setup I have ever seen. The hotel should convert half the rooms into shower only rooms. Not everyone needs a tub. This would allow an all glass shower to be installed in the corner and function better. I was 6 months pregnant while at the hotel and found climbing in and out of the shower difficult and dangerous (it gets slippery). They provide step to help guests into the shower, but you still must hoist yourself over the shower edge.
The food and beverage manager is incredibly nice! It seemed like he was always working. Breakfast was fantastic! Food prices were high, but that is the norm in Seychelles. If the drinks were slightly less, we probably would have ordered a lot more so I’m not sure they are doing themselves any good. In general, I’m not a huge buffet fan unless I’m in Vegas or at a 5-star hotel. They are just never that great and the buffet at Avani is no different. We were definitely glad that we didn’t pay for the half-board! There is also a Thai restaurant on the premise which had the best food. We were disappointed that every single lunch offered was buffet. We avoided this by ordering from the pool menu, but the buffets in general (lunch or dinner) were over-priced and poor quality. Also, the hotel gives out delicious popsicles when checking in. We asked to buy some one afternoon and they wouldn’t sell us any or give us any. We walked to the left of the hotel to a petrol station and bought some, but we found it odd that the hotel wouldn’t have those available after check-in.
The pool isn’t great for children. The shallow end is still VERY deep. Also, the wood around the pool gets very hot during the day. They have no signs warning of this. We watched numerous people get surprised by the scalding temperatures and burn their feet. The beach was clean and very relaxed/private. The swimming area is off to the right of the property and best when the tide is down. The hotel could easily improve the beach by raking it each morning and disposing of the seaweed. Before Avani we stayed at a 5-star property on another island and this made a huge difference in the appearance of the beach.
I was hopeful based on hotel comments at the Internet problems had been resolved. We found the Internet to be painfully slow and we couldn’t get any work done. I complained to the reception about this and was transferred to an IT person who quickly gave me a different, faster Internet code which worked great. Why isn’t this code the one always given out? The slower speed Internet worked ok on our phones, but we couldn’t open any web pages on our laptops until we switched to the high speed.
The hotel has a lot of potential. The layout is great, it reminded us of the retro hotels in Palm Springs built in the 1960s. If the hotel works a bit harder at the details it will be excellent. The bath products are cheap, the beach could be cleaner, and the hotel said that the water wasn’t safe to drink, but they only give two small bottles a day – cheap. The hotel is out of the way from much, we only had 3 full days at the property and all we wanted was to lay by the pool/beach and relax so this suited us fine. However, if you want to explore the island, definitely rent a car because taxis are expensive. We found the staff to be incredibly nice and accommodating and incredibly nice.
