My fiancee and I have just returned from a wonderful 7 day stay in a water bungalow at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon resort and we easily describe it as our finest holiday yet.
This was our first time in the Maldives and we had bombarded the resort with many e-mails before going as we were unsure what to expect having read the reviews, travelling somewhere different and our worries were compounded when I received a call the day before departing to say some dredging woek was happening on the island.
However, from start to finish we had a wonderful experience. Met at Male airport by a representative, our leggage was whisked off and we were shown onto our boat where we were greeted by yet more staff who helped us on and offered cool towels and a drink. After the shoet boat ride we were welcomed in by staff waving to us from the pier. Don't know how many times a day the poor staff had to do this, but they were nontheless genuinely welcoming and friendly.
On arrival details for our $100 a day room deposit were taken and we were taken by golf buggy to our accomodation; by the time we arrived at out water bungalow our luggage was there was already waitng.
Previous reviewers were right that the food prices are high and the drinks equally, but it was hard for us to complain as we had sat gazing at the stars in the Anchorgae Bar each and every night, twice with a different Maldivan live band.
As previously mentioned breakfast is a wonder- fresh fruits, grains, porridge, congee, cereals, pastries, breads, cheeses, cold meats, youghurt, and egg chef, chapatis, beef and pork sausages (frankfurters really) different cutrries each day (lamb, chicken, tuna)and an egg chef. A sri Lankan concoction pronounced 'sambal'? had us coming back for more each morning. One strange thing was that the tea for two we had each morning with breakfast tasted and smelt like chocolate consistently. Very strange, but by the end we got used to our chocolate tea.
Food was good, we ate mainly from the Anchorage Bar, which also shares a menu with Sand Coast Cafe and triples as the menu for room service dining. Fish and chips was amazing, with a different fish everyday, we tried parrotfish (our oersonal favourite) reef fish and red snapper. The steak with green peppercorns was divine and the chocolate cake was delicious, we had it with coconut ice cream, which as everyone says is the best the've ever tasted and I don't even like coconut. Oh and did I mention the milkshakes and cocktails? Fantastic. Evenings were made evn more interesting through our conversations with the staff, who were responsive and helpful and of course very knowledgeable about the Maldives, their home.
We both had 2 treatments at the spa, which they have recently rebranded to 'Shine Spa' from 'Aquum'. We had booked one treatment each from the UK, but enjoyed it so much, we opted for another despite the awful cost!!! I had hot stone massage and my other half had a thai massage. You are then taken to a 'chill out' room, which was very relaxing and then are able to use the facilities of the outdoor tub/pool and steam room. We had our massages side by side, which was nice, but the spa area was split into fe/male.
The island itself is close to Male and as such you have a fair amount of boat traffic and sea planes, but our water bungalow was so beautiful and the island itself so pretty, we found it difficult to complain. The main room is gorgeous and my favourite parts of the accomodation was the huge day bed/sofa and the bath that overlooks the sea. My fiancee was braver than me in the water, the idea and reality of snorkelling were a bit much for me and we tended to use the beach and water opposite the water bungalows instead of climbing doen from our patio. The patio itself was spacious enought with two chairs, two loungers, a table and cushions. there's also a shower for you to use outside when you've come staright from the water. Turndown service and cleaning is twice a day at regular times and 2 500ml bottles of water are provided daily as were tea bags, milk, sugar and coffee. We took some light snacks with us as well as tea bags, sugar etc, which definately came in handy however. There is a fan and a/c in the main room, but none in the bathroom and the toilet was tiny, bearable, but tiny.
There is a gift shop on the island, which had gifts to suit all budgets and wasn't as expensive as we'd anticipated and we got some nice pressies for everyone at home.
The resort is dominated by couples and has lots of honeymooners, a few families were present, but all children were well behaved and well supervised by their parents. Most of the other visitors were from Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, India and Sri Lanka and you only really saw people at mealtimes or on excursions (we went dolphin watching), but we sometimes waved at other couples who had become familiar during the week.
Nothing was too much for any of the staff and they were constantly attentive without being intrusive in any way, which is a tricky balance they pulled off with aplomb. We are aware we went while the resort was quiet and so had an outstanding staff to guest ratio, but feel confident the service would not be of a lessar standard at other times of the year.
All in all we loved, loved , loved the Full Moon resort and cannot wait to return.
