“Where do i begin..........”

... well okay from arrival on Makunudu ....WOW!!!. this was our 6th visit to the Maldives and Makunudu is definately the best island we have been to. They are all good and are all pretty much the same although saying that Makunudu was the smallest being only 36 rooms, which were very authentic, comfortable and felt great. On approach from our speedboat journey the view was as expected a beautiful island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. We were welcomed with a cool cloth and a non-alcoholic cocktail which is all you need after a long flight. After going through the normal forms etc we were shown to our room which was beautiful, very authentic and clean. Our room boy was excellent, clean towels were provided daily, bed linen regularly, decorated bed a few times during our stay. We were extremely pleased. We loved the little road runners (water hens) round our room (we had our own little visitor daily) and on the island they were funny.

Once you leave your room to visit the beach it was wonderful walking through a little greenery and onto the beach which was cleaned early mornings, the ocean was as expected, snorkeld and swam. Beach should are needed for swimming in parts of the ocean as it cna be slightly corally although there are parts you can walk/swim without shoes.

The resturant was great real rustic, dark lighting made it feel real there were also wooden tables and chairs with candels and laid up nice, the service was excellent I called out table waiter Sugar, he was so helpful and very expert. The food was wonderful with buffet style breakfast and lunch, great choice even for the most fussiest eater. Different choices of eggs was available to go with a cooked breakfast, cereals were available along with fruit etc. The Al e carte meals five nights a week was excellent. the food menue was well thought out well done to everyone. On the tuesday night there was a beach bbq (weather depending), this was also excellent and on Friday nights it is Maldivian night which goes without saying was brilliant.

The bar was open from 10am until late althoguh AI finished around midnight. There is an excellent choice of drinks both soft and alcoholic, the white wine was the best i've tasted in the Maldives. All drinks were wonderful a great service too the staff were brilliant thansk Bala, Shah and Habib, hope the decking is finished (was being renewed at a fantastric pace and working all hours to get it finished to their guests, although we were never stopped going outside on the decking). Great service with smiles all round.

The reception staff were fabulous can't thank them enough especially Akrim, Jason (Ahmed) and
Jalil, thanks guys you made us smile every time we passed reception or needed anything. Was lovely to see your smiling faces first thing in morning until last thing at night and special thanks for coming up the jetty to see us off on our way home a wonderful touch..... we will definately be back.

To the new manager of the island please don;t change anything on Makunudu it is so real. I understand sometimes things need a little updating but it was the BEST island we have been to and a massive thank you to all the staff. Well Done....Caroline & Steve

We have just returned from our honeymoon at Makunudu. We specifically chose this island as it seems rustic and personal, without the hype of a large resort or entertainment; being on our honeymoon we wanted privacy and relaxation...and WOW this was a perfect choice. Makunudu was simply the best place I have ever been in my life.
The service was outstanding, particular thanks to Akrim on reception and our waiter Samh who couldnt do enough for us.
The food was excellent. The buffet breakfast and lunch was always fresh and flavoursome with lots of choice, and the evening set meal was always fantastic. We found having your evening meal served properly to you instead of a buffet made it much more like 'going out for dinner' and therefore more special for the evening. The waiters couldn't do enough to help. As we were on our honeymoon we had a special private dinner one evening on the beach, we expected it to be just outside the restaurant but it was on the other side of the island, completely private and only lit up with candle light and lanterns. It was so special and romantic. I will never ever forget that evening.
The snorkling and beaches were beautiful, saw turtles literally just off the beach. Simply breathtaking!
We were in Villa no 7 which was a good location with a great patch of beach.
We tipped jut a few dollars every couple of nights as they totally deserved it.
The island is not suitable for families, there's no entertainment or pool but for couples, for relaxing and peace it is perfect.
We loved it so much, I would never go to another island if and when we visit the Maldives again, we may return for an anniversary in several years time.
Thanks Makunudu for the making our honeymoon so perfect! x

Wow! We have just come back from 2 weeks at Makunudu. Its a perfect place for a quiet holiday, but with plenty to do if you want. We had room 18, which has a fantastc beach area, and only a neighbour on one side. At this bungalow you had chairs in the shade and loungers in the sun. On the other side of the island (no's 1-17) at this time of year you would lose the sun about 4 pm. We had sun all day. Some of the villas around the mid 20's have their chairs and loungers in the shade, with no room to move them into sun, so if you want sun, make sure you request this in advance.
The staff are all very friendly, the food is fantastic, I ate fish every day, but there is a huge choice if you not so keen on fish. We snorkled every day, and saw loads of fish, turtles, and sharkes. You can borrow marks, snorkles and fins, all free.
There were trips you could do;snorkling, fishing, both very good, and one to a local fishing village, I would not recommend this trip, as it is not a very pretty place (I was expecting huts, and fishing boats) but it was more like a small town, and just a way to get tourists to shops! If we had realised we would not have gone!
We found the room to be lovely, not run down as some people have mentioned, however we are not used to expensive hotels, so to us it was lovely. The hairdryer is not that clever, so recommend you take your own, I didn't and wished I had! The room boy came twice a day, and the towels changed every day, and the sheets changed regularly.
We had a private dinner on the beach, and that was very special. Our friends did the private meal on a sand bar and they said that was amazing!
The spa was lovely, the lady is called Taj, lovely treatments, only slight problem is the location of the spa, it is not in the best place, however having had a conversation with the new manager, he is looking to move it as soon as possible.
We had a couple of goes on the catamaran (free), Mahammed takes you out. We also took the canoe out ($22 per hour), there is also water sking and a dive school (both chargeable). There is also table tennis and a badminton court if you are feeling energetic.
The bar is open from 10am till late, choice of drinks on AI is very good, the house red wine was especially good.
I would highly recommend Makunudu, and we want to go back as soon as we have saved up!
I would be pleased to answer any questions, if you would like to ask...
Happy holidays!

Makunudu Island is a small resort- perfect if you wish to spend some romantic lonesome time together!!!
The staff was very friendly, the Food delicious and the rooms allways clean. In Front of your bungalow you will find a small seperated place - just a few meters away from the beach - have a look at the fotos....
Instead of hp we booked all inclusive and i would recomend because drinks and other stuff are like everywhere else at the maledives not "too cheap";-)
All in all we enjoyed a perfect honeymoon and we will come again!!!

I choose Makunudu after reading other reviews of the island amongst many other similar resorts in the Maldives and it was all exactley what i wanted.....
i went all alone in search of peace and quiet and fantastic snorkeling and to my delight was just perfect! After reading a previous and very helpful review, I requested a bungalow in the 30's (they have only 38) on the right side of the main entrance and the arrivals jetty and they were very accomodating and geve me no 32. the bungalows are cute, nice big bed, comfortable and large bathroom and a little sitting area, just outside there is beach chairs under a canopy of wild greens and palm trees and few steps down a quiet and white sandy beach on the most wonderful sea you can dream of! the reef is just few meters from the beach and it is incredible! a garden of corals and so full of so many fish, it was a delight after a nice breakfast going for a swim.....(besides the rest of the day of course:-) I saw sting rays, puffer fish, trigger and parrot fish, wasses, damzel, angel fish and bat fish and many others that i can't remeber the names. The left side of the island is also very rich, and with big blue fin jacks.
The jetty area is visited every night by a rather large group of nurse sharks, one of the guys is there with a potent flash light to show it to anyone that wants to.
the service staff is sweet and corteous, not in your face but there when you need them, the breakfast is probably the best meal of all, nice pastries, eggs as you like, fresh cut fruits and all the other things you might want with it, i usually skip lunch and have instead a nice fresh fruit juce and a coffee so i can't say anything about the buffet they serve at luch but from the look of it it seems raher nice!
Dinner however is a bit, well, disappointing..... i mean they try hard to make it nice and one night I had one of the best cooked chicken ever, but the following night i had the hardest piece of fish ever :-) i think they try to hard......simpler would be better i think...... a salad should be a salad, crisp and refreshing especially if it's following a soup, most of the times was some kind of concoction that was called "salad" but had nothing to do with it.... but hey, i'm being very very picky here!
I'm horrible with names and I can't remember the name of my waiter or the room boy or the very informative and kind guy at the resecption, but i was very well attended and the room was kept spotless and free of the little dust that felt from the tatched roof. Overall you are in a small island in the middle of the ocean and i thought they managed they limitations quite well! Yes there are ants but i've never been bitten and there was no moskitoes! yayyy!
I could keep all to myself undisturbed by others all trhoughout my week there, which was exactley what i wanted and I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: the lower 30's

At first, the island is wonderful. House reef is rich in underwater life. Breathtaking every day snorkelling is secured (turtles, sharks, eagle rays, many kinds of fish, squids, morays). Makunudu completely justify its reputation.
But not because of staff. I want to call direct menegments attention to the quality of service. Our waiter, room boy and one guy from the Sand Bar were absolutely indifferent. So indifferent, that its border to the roughness. They are all always waiting for tips, but don’t do anything to deserve it. And even after tipping they are stay lazy and neglect their duty. I think some of them require strict supervision over their work. After all excellent reviews we were strongly disappointment.
I want to be true, guys from reception, bar, boat crew are competent, friendly, always ready to help.
Finely, a little useful information. To visitors, who have HB package. HB in Makunudu includes breakfast and dinner (quality of food is mediocre and not always fresh), 1 cup 4 o’clock tea or coffee with daily cookies. Drinks not including. Also you have 15 min complimentary shoulder massage in spa, 10 min using scuba without deep, 1 snorkeling boat trip, 1 night fishing and unlimited using of snorkeling, badminton and table tennis equipment.
Every day change of towels, only once a week change of bed linens (unfortunately). Renewal of soap, shampoo and tea/coffee/sugar only for separate request.
Prices on island are reasonable. Beer 3-4.50$, beverages 3-6$, cocktails 9-16$, tea and fresh brewed coffee 3-10$. Bar food 7-25$, delicious and good quality, wines and champaign 20-60$. Spa from 50$ for body scrub to 180$ for some complex programs. Late check out: 100$ to 6 p.m. All prices excluding 16% taxes.
You can also buy postcards and stamps in kiosk, and send greetings to your family and friends. Very nice.

Where to start? We flew BA Gatwick to Male, the flight was less than half full, and the service and food were excellent. Both us and some of the cabin crew nearly didn’t make the flight due to the usual car park on the M25.

Entry into the country was painless and the new airport buildings are well on their way to being finished. The boat was a five minute wait which was no problem as the sun was shining and watching the other boats zoom in and out was a rare treat. Had to drop some people off at CocoPalm but that only took a couple of minutes and then we had the boat to ourselves. It was an exciting ride as water was a little choppy, but life jackets are handed out before you leave the jetty :)

We arrived and were greeted with cool towels and a refreshing drink. We were given the room we requested so very happy. Would like to mention the lovely Akram here always smiling and helpful also managed to take the best photo of the two of us. The Island on a couple of nights only had 19 guests so extremely quiet. The rooms are OK. Fairly basic but they had nearly everything you could need. There was soap and shampoo provided. Beware of the shampoo it took the colour out of my swimwear hate to think what it would do to my hair. I would have liked a set of drawers as the ones in the room were very shallow under the dressing table, and one bedside drawer. It didn’t matter as took too many clothes anyway. Removed half the contents of the minibar and used it to store our own water and goodies. $3 for a mini toblerone or small Mars bar.
Sayeed (not sure how you spell his name) looked after our room and left us with a huge variety of bed art. The creatures in the roof leave little piles of chewed dust in the shower most days so twice a day cleaning keeps the place nice. We had a problem with insect bites so one night we sprayed under the bed and 5 ant type creatures immediately crawled out. Was this what was biting us? We don’t know but every night after that we made sure we sprayed thoroughly. Used insect repellent on myself but still got bitten.
Had two lizards in the bathroom each about 9 inches long, probably fallen off the roof into the bathroom. Encouraged them onto the floor where I could gently pick them up and put them back outside. I think they were pleased to get out.
Herons abound on the beach, each having their own bit. Very elegant and photogenic. The water hens are very friendly and will take food from your hand. Beware of the Terns if they are nesting, they can get a bit aggressive when protecting their nest and dive bomb you. It’s easy, just stay away from them. There were a couple nesting on the jetty and we were hoping to see some chicks but they hadn’t hatched by the time we left.

The hotel were busy refurbishing the empty rooms whilst we were there ready for the high season, but this wasn't a problem.
We were lucky to be in a room next to the only other English people on the island. Thanks Tim & Julia for making it good fun.

Unfortunately for us it was Euro 2012 and every night from 9.30 it was football on a large screen in the bar. Shah and Pareethu are wonderful bar staff and after a short time we didn’t need to order drinks they just brought over my mint tea and Paul’s beer.

Food was excellent, plenty of choice and the barbecue and Maldivian nights were really nice. The baked potatoes on the barbecue being a particular favourite of mine. As I don’t eat meat the choice of fish was very good but on one occasion the soup, ‘salad’ course and in the pasta dish all had meat in them, so it was fish again! Rafeeu was our waiter for most of the two weeks and served us well including a lesson in napkin folding one night. Ask about how to make the roast chicken, very funny – now how was that done again?
Breakfast was varied and the omelettes cooked to perfection, can’t remember the name of the chap that cooked them but they were superb . We went AI but on reflection half board would have saved us a not insignificant amount of money. Neither of us are big drinkers and could easily have missed lunch on occasion. We only once had afternoon snacks and never in the morning.

The reef was amazing. I had never successfully snorkelled before, more like drowning slowly but had a really good time here. We walked a few feet down the beach and walked into warm shallow water. Sometimes the water wasn’t very clear due to the sand and you had to be careful when you swam in the shallower parts as some of the lumps of coral could have given you a nasty scrape or two. We used to get in by the jetty where the water was clear and also nice and shallow. The fish are swimming round you as soon as you get in the water and there are so many we had to buy another book to try and identify them all. The reef directly in front of our room (32) was very good but we found the Table corals going out from the restaurant were FABULOUS. Beware of strong currents around the island in some places. We also went on the free snorkelling trip where we saw turtles in abundance. One even swam up to us where it let us stroke it.
Saw one shark in the water but it went past so fast by the time I’d mumbled shark into the snorkel it had gone. Every evening from 5 you can see Nurse sharks around the jetty, take a good torch to see them clearly at night.

We were lucky only had one night of torrential rain – it stopped the football that night as no satellite signal :). Evening entertainment was a singer/guitar player one night in the first week and 2 singers/guitarists one night in the second. Very low key and most people go to their rooms after evening meal.

It is truly a barefoot island, take your shoes off when you arrive and you don’t need them until you leave. Yes some of the paths are a little rough on delicate feet but you soon get used to it. Things are so relaxed here, was really able to unwind. 14 nights may be too much for some people but I can honestly say, if I had the money, I’d be straight back for another two weeks.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 - 17 on Table coral side of island. Rooms 36 -16 jetty side. We liked being able to watch...
