YMCA calls itself a hostel but to me, it's better than that!
I first stayed in YMCA 7 years ago before the renovation and have stayed there everytime I go to KL for holidays. I love everything about YMCA - location, cleanliness, convenience, friendly staff, etc.
Located just opposite Sentral Station (the main transport hub), it's ultra convenient to travel around. From Sentral Station, I can basically travel all over KL using the trains. It even more convenient when I have to catch the bus to Low Cost Carrier Terminal for my AirAsia flights. It's located in Brickfields which some people say is a dodgy area but I never had any problem. Just used my common sense and avoided going out after midnight.
YMCA was renovated about 2 to 3 years ago and it now looks better. They have even installed a lift which is a blessing for those with luggages. There are basically two sides to the hotel, one facing Sentral Station and the other facing a backlane. I prefer the one facing Sentral station because the backlane can get noisy in the early mornings and at supper time due to the eateries there.
The rooms are always very clean and tidy. Some rooms come with attached hot water showers while the cheaper ones will have to use the common bathrooms. The windows can be opened so it's good for those who find air-con dehydrating. There are bigger rooms for families at $PM120 i think. I took a peek and it was quite spacious.
There is a laundry and internet pit stop on the ground floor but you have to pay for both. There is another internet place in the backlane.
It's extremely easy to get food. Just opposite are a few Chinese coffee shops and Indian restaurants with good variety and reasonable prices. If you want fast food, Sentral Station has that. For light groceries, the indian provision shops opposite will provide everything you need - water, snacks, newspapers, etc.
I don’t know what else to rave about YMCA. In the past, the sleazy reputation of Brickfields put a damper on it but now, there is really nothing to worry about. For RM$80 a night for your own private room with air-con and a hot shower, I don’t think there is anything better value for money in KL. I have stayed in Impiana, Citrus, PJ something but I have always come back to YMCA. It’s not a 5 star with a personal butler but for the budget traveler who needs to travel around, it’s simply heaven.
