“Don't stay in the large dormitory”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Stayed here for 1 night in the huge dormitory. There was one air conditioning unit for the entire room and it smelt hot and sweaty when we walked in. the location is good but we found much better accommodation around the corner for not much more money.
All night there were people coughing and my girlfriend the next morning had to get out of the room as fast as possible as the heat was making her feel sick.
I cant comment on the other rooms but if your going to stay here then go for a smaller dorm.

In KL you'd be pushed to find safe accommodation as cheap as this place but definitely only stay here if you are on a budget. My boyfriend and I stayed in the 24 bed dorm, having stayed in dorms of this size before whilst travelling I don't think I've ever stayed in one that is as smelly as this one.

Pros: Friendly and Helpful staff (helped us arrange accommodation in Singapore at a discounted rate)
Breakfast included (standard toast, jam, pb)
20 ringgit per night
Cheap laundry facilities (10 ringgit per wash, detergent included)
Locker included (bring your own lock!)
Door access card entry

Cons: the smell of the stuffy room made it unbearable if you are in there past 9am
Air con only on from 9pm until 9am (a/c leaked out into a bucket in the corridor which, in turn, made the corridor smell)
Mixed bathroom male/ female
Only three showers per floor ( not really enough for the amount of people on each floor)
Uncomfortable benches in the lounge
The lounge also smelt badly (and strangely of cat litter), more bearable than the room tho!

Following our 3 nights at fernloft we moved next door to mantahari lodge one which was much nicer, and only a 6 bed dorm for just 5 ringgit more!

Location: Really great. I love it. Next to Pasar Seni MRT Station. Same row with 24-hrs convenience store 7-11, just across Central Market, 5 minutes walking to Petaling Street, the heaven of copycat item.

Room: 4-bed dorm room not so popular. On the first day, only 2 beds occupied, second day, 3 beds occupied. I had a peek at the many-beds dorm, it was so pack and seem hot. But it was nice because you can meet other traveler. The room is clean.

Aircond: At first, i thought the AC got a problem. But not, the AC will not operate on a day, only at night. The AC is working properly and quiet cold. No remote to control the temperature.

Security: The use the keycard. You need your card to open the entrance door. To enter your floor area, you again need your keycard. So, it is quiet safe.

Toilet: They have many toilets, bathrooms. Clean. So, I had no problem at all with this.

Breakfast: Well, I did not took any breakfast while staying here even though they served the breakfast because I always wake up late.

Had I been younger and much more adventurous, I would have (maybe) enjoyed this hostel/lodge. Unfortunately we came in for a short unremarkable stay after a long bus-ride and having trolley luggage instead of backpacks made it a pain to get up the stairs (no elevator). The view from the common breakfast area is pretty good (it was a plus to be able to enjoy a cigarette there) and the fare is similar to what most dorm-type hostels offer and the backpacker crowd is interesting to say the least.

I just didn't like the state of the shared showers and toilets. I was pleasantly surprised by the nice indoor common areas but the shower and toilet situation makes me think twice about going back there. I guess my age makes me want for much cleaner toilets and showers and an elevator.

For their prices you might just think about trying them if you're in a bind budget-wise. Maybe I would give them a better rating in better circumstances. hehehe

Room Tip: Book early, get the floor closest to the ground level. Shower and use the toilets earlier than every...

We found fernloft because it was the only place with reasonably priced laundry in the area. We got a decent deal on a double room. The rooms were just slightly bigger than the beds, and the AC was only on at night. Still, they were clean, along with the bathrooms. Besides the reasonable laundry, the best thing about the place is the location. The wifi almost never worked properly, and was glacial when it did. "Breakfast" wasn't worth waking up for. (Honestly I don't understand how toast and tea qualify as breakfast anyway.) This place is neither a ripoff nor a hidden gem, but it may work for you. It's middle of the road.

We did not have a good experience staying at this hostel. We were sleeping in the 24 beds dorm room, the smell was not that nice, but the terrible thing that happened was that our Ipad is stolen over there. With some other stuff, wallets and phones from other people. The staff didn't help us at all. The bathrooms also weren't that nice, and the toilets were wet all the time. The good thing about the hostel is the price. But not for us, is cost us an Ipad.
