“Friendly, cheap, clean (except for the mould), but very basic and no windows - you get what you pay for”
okay, the conditions for choosing this cheapo-place where as follows: I knew I would arrive late in the evening after a looooong Bus ride (10 hrs) and only required a clean space to get some sleep, and my accom should have easy access from KL's temporary Bus-Station at Bukit Jalil.
I then found out about this small (20 rooms or so) hotel just a few steps away from PUDU LRT-Station, so I was able to avoid dealing with KL's notorious Taxi-Mafia at Bukit Jalil. Plus they advertised free in-room WIFI, so I could do my daily work.
Indeed the hotel is just less than 5 minutes walk away from PUDU LRT-station, next to the MAYBANK-building. On arrival, the owner ( I assume it was the owner) helped me carry my heavy bag to my room on the 2nd floor (no elevator of course, it's just 3 storeys), and handed me a map of KL, with the hotel marked on it. Such helpfulness you would not necessarily expect at a budget hotel. When opening the door of the room, it turned out that the room had no window / daylight. If I knew that before I would have definitely NOT booked a room here. I hate that! ALL rooms are like that, probably with the exception of the two rooms per floor facing the street. The room was very small, just enough for one Queensize bed plus a TV-Set in front of the bed (see my pics). Bathroom very basic, but at least clean and no roaches or similar unwanted creatures. There was a huge scary crack in the wall (see pic). As this is quite an old ramshackle kind of 3-storey shophouse-building, and the rooms having absolutely ZERO ventilation, it was no wonder that there was a strong smell of mould everywhere, including the room (though at least no mould visible), though I am sure they do their best to get rid of that, but under such conditions it is just impossible. Already when climbing the stairs to the first floor, u see the mould on the wall at the staircase. It looked pretty disgusting (didn't take a pic of that, unfortunately). The bed had a decent mattress, and the aircon was powerful. The showerhead in the bathroom was placed at the most inconvenient place possible, exactly above the toilet bowl. So basically, to make best use of the shower, you would have to stand inside the bowl ;-)
there was free WIFI which I used, until it got disconnected after 20 minutes or so. I went down to the reception, where already the night auditor was on duty. He then called his boss and “boss” came back to the reception to fix the problem, even he had actually already finished his work for the day. After 15 minutes, they were able to detect the error and internet worked again. That was a great attitude which often you can not even find at 4-star hotels in KL, where they will just tell you “your Laptop is faulty” or anything like that. Well, they do care here, though nevertheless, I did not entirely like the tiny rooms without window, and was not unhappy to leave after one night and move to a more sophisticated hotel, which admittedly cost three times as much as the room in ZASS.
So, would I stay here again or recommend the place to others ? Well, under EXACTLY the same conditions (arriving at Bukit Jalil late in the evening) then maybe I would stay there again, but on the other hand, there are so many new and decent-value budget hotels popping up in KL these days (not only Tunehotel, but as well myhotel.com at Sentral, or stayorange at Petaling street) where u can get much better and more modern rooms for just 10-20 Ringgit more, which means most probably I would prefer to stay somewhere else. But then again, owners are very friendly and helpful and take care of the place as much as they can, security is good (and prostitution prohibited as they announce on all booking websites), so if your budget is REALLY tight, you can give it a try. You get what u pay for, and u don't pay that much (70 RM). Better contact the hotel directly, to avoid unnecessary booking charges imposed by all those online-hotel-portals. The price is same online or booking directly with the hotel (they accept cash only, though). Pls check my pics as they might be able to say more than words, and if u liked my review, give me a positive mark, thank you
