“Excellent and affordable hotel in Osaka”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2010

Hotel the Lutheran is something of a secret hidden from Western tourists. Its website is not easily navigated if you cannot read Japanese and it does not come up in searches on many booking sites, such as Expedia. However, its reviews on Tripadvisor were very positive and broadly deserved.

The hotel staff were friendly and spoke a little English. The hotel is attached to a Lutheran convention centre; however, the staff did not seem concerned that we were two groups of gay male couples wishing to share double beds. They checked with us that our booking was correct, but did not question it further.

The hotel rooms were very surprising for such an economical business hotel – light and airy and much larger than expected. The hotel facilities were excellent and breakfast (which was included) good.

The location was the hotel’s only drawback: travelling anywhere necessitated a ride on the subway. However, the subway is clean, efficient and reasonably priced. We had chosen to stay in Osaka as a central point for travelling to Kyoto and to Koya-san. It took around 90 minutes each day to travel to Kyoto.

This hotel is a decent, clean and comfortable business hotel in the heart of Osaka. The check-in was a quick and friendly and the room was clean, new-looking, spacious (for Japan) and well appointed.

The hotel location is great for visiting Osaka Castle, and there is a subway station approximately 5 minutes walk away.

Generally I found this hotel was very comfortable, without shining out amongst others I've been in.

We enjoyed nearly a week at The Lutheran, and it was a pleasure to come home to each evening. Located almost in the centre of Osaka -a block from Osaka castle (sadly blocked from view by a new building adjacent to the hotel !) , the Lutheran appears to have been built very recently, with fittings & finishings all very elegant & modern. The room was huge (we'd heard Japan rooms were little) and comfortable. Staff were very friendly & helpful. Nearby a plethora of restaurants were available, and the heart of Osaka shopping & dining districts are only 2-3 stations away by train by either line, as is Osaka's Osaka & Umeda JR & Shinkansen stations. As usual in Japan, I'd recommend downloading a map & printing directions to find your hotel, which in this case is very easy - take the metro (train) to Tanimachi 4-Chome station, leave via exit 1b (adjacent to the Chuo line platforms, but reachable from the other line too-see the yellow exit maps on the platform walls to find it).At the top of the exit 1b stairs the hotel is a few metres up the street to the right of the convenience store.Like a lot of Japanese hotels, it lacked a pool or a fitness centre, which I think was the only thing that was missing (luckily, the state fitness centre about 20 minutes away by train to the west, near Osaka Aquarium & Universal Studios theme park, was able to provide this for active tourists & locals !)

The hotel looks brand new. The size is like any typical japanese hotel rooms. there was pc provided in the room and there was also free internet provided. breakfast was not too bad...a combination of japanese and american breakfast. overall the hotel is not bad and is located near the osaka castle. the surroundings of the hotel is not bad as well.

  • Liked — cleanliness and free internet access/pc
  • Disliked — none
