Very impressive buildings. Do not miss the Japanese garden a few minutes' walk to the North-East from the temple.

“Japans religious history in the one place.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Getting to Shittenoji Temple is easy via the 2 nearby subway stations. The grounds are well kept with many interesting outer buildings as well as the centre piece pagoda. There are various small shrines where prayers are offered but you need to know what they are for. For those interested in seeing old temples close to Osaka CBD, this is a good place but is not a must see.

“Japan's oldest temple is worth a visit just for the magnificent Gokuraku-jodo Garden!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

I was in Osaka for a weekend and decided to visit Shi tennoji on a whim. One of Japan's oldest temples founded in 593 by Price Shotoku, the various buildings have burned or been otherwise damaged and rebuilt in the image of the 6th-century originals. Out of the fifty or so Buddhist temples I visited around Japan, it was the only one where I was able to climb the five-story pagoda, which was a neat experience.

The main attraction for me was the stunning Gokuraku-jodo Garden (which requires a separate admission fee); this garden was originally created in the early Edo period. Paradise Lake has a unique blue pagoda added during the Meiji period that looks like it would be at home in a Hayao Miyazaki film. The cherry blossoms were in bloom when I visited, and it is truly one of the most enchanting and evocative Japanese gardens I've had the pleasure to visit. Shi tennoji is definitely worth a visit the next time you're in Osaka and could easily be combined into a day of sightseeing visiting Osaka Castle (which I did).
