“Simply gorgeous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

This place is beautiful, peaceful, and fun to walk around and enjoy. The gardens are stunning. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom. So relaxing. Yes it is a bit out of the hectic shopping districts but well worth the journey. Actually it is only one train from the Namba station so it is VERY easy to get to.

“Wonderful natural temple”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

This temple is a fantastic place to appreciate Shintoism in its traditional state. It is sparsely built and the god-trees really are the stars of the show.

The lovely shrine buildings are uniquely Japanese and the way that the space is a perfect mix of natural and man-made beauty makes this a very special temple.

Well worth the short train ride from Namba.

“A little piece of zen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

Sumiyoshi Taisha is an old temple that avoided damage in World War II, and pre-dates Chinese influence. After the hustle and bustle of the Osaka city centre, it was a beautiful piece of zen. Observing the organised preparations for New Years (which are big at this temple), and a few families or couples coming to say a few prayers over the holiday season, was a special sight.

“One of the biggest shrines in Japan with the famous drum bridge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Who would not give five out five to Sumiyoshi shrine where they attracts thousands of visitors everyday during the new year celebration in Japan? If you have an opportunity to be in Osaka for the first few days of January, then you must visit here to experience the crazy number of people who pay their worship to the Shinto Kami, the Gods and Goddesses. If witnessing the cloud is not your thing, then visit when it is unclouded and you can see their famous e drum bridge. A huge shrine.
