I took advantage of the Kaiyu Kippu ("Unlimited Pass") to go to the Osaka Kaiyukan. This was 2400 yen and included the Aquarium admission, unlimited city-owned travel for the day, and discounts at various other locations and attractions around the city(though the explaination of those is only in Japanese). Being the early-bird that every US traveler in Japan is thanks to jet-lag, I showed up right at the opening bell, and perhaps that was my mistake. Sure, the building is astonishing, and the way they spiral you down through the 8 floors of aquatic goodness is pretty neat. However, had it not been for the whale sharks and the enourmous man-o-ray-type-thing in the central "Pacific Oceac" tank, this would have been a major waste of my time and money. As with everything in Japan, the place was crowded from wall to wall. It took a good 5 mintues of elbow shoving at every pane of glass to get near enough to see or even take a photo. Fortunately, I'm 6', which is slightly taller than the Japanese height average, so I was able to see over the crowds on most occasions, but it was generally annoying. As I said, perhaps I just picked a bad day and time to go, but I felt like I got ripped off. I was much more impressed by the one in Nagoya, and it was failry crowded, too. The content and shows there (which I did not see any at the Osaka aquarium) seemed much more worth my money.
