The Westin Osaka certainly isn't a bad hotel - it's clean (if a little dated), the rooms are large and the staff is wonderful and friendly. But when you compare it to other Westin hotels, or other choices within the same price range in Osaka, it doesn't measure up.
There are some good views from the upper floors. The grounds of the hotel are nice and there is an interesting garden that leads to the Sky Building complex, which makes for a nice evening stroll.
But, the property is well away from the center of Umeda and, except for the Sky Building and it's small food court, there's not much worth doing in the immediate neighborhood. On weekends, the place is a ghost town. The closest shopping and transportation are a 10-15 minute walk away. Though the shuttle bus is convenient and comfortable, waiting for it is a hassle, especially when the weather is cold, or at times when traffic is bad.
And the property itself just isn't what you expect from a Westin. The rooms and common areas, while well maintained, are dated and feel institutional. The room service food was bland and uninspiring. Only some of the rooms have internet access (you have to request one at check-in) and the business center isn't open on weekends. TV channels are limited and there are no English-language movie channels.
In Osaka, I've stayed at the Hilton, Granvia, Imperial and New Otani and would recommend all of them above the Westin. If you're looking for a convenient hotel, or if you're expecting the quality of a typical Westin hotel, you might find yourself disappointed. I know I did.
