We had intially booked to stay at the ANA Crowne Plaza in Osaka and at the last minute discovered that it was more affordable and convenient to stay Swissotel Nankai for our jaunt through Osaka. Best. Decision. Ever.
Everything about the Swissotel is perfect- the service is friendly, the rooms are decadent and the location is ludicrously convenient, that it if you can find your way out of the labyrinthyine Namba Station. We were fortunate enough to happen accross a Swissotel employee, Raymond, who escorted us out of the station and to the front desk. It was the little things like that that made our stay at Swissotel so enjoyable.
We checked in and discovered that the room we had booked (King bed) was not the room we were given (double bed). A quick call to reception to work things out (the staff are all very understanding) and we were taken to a different room and no fuss was made.
The room was gorgeous, decorated in earthy tones and with a bed that was insanely comfortable and views across the urban Osaka metropolis. Our bathroom was well appointed and the TV had english channels. The internet is a little pricey, but this was easily balanced out by the low cost of the room. (It's worth noting we were travelling at the height of Swine Flu mania- not sure if this was the reason for the low price)
Once we were orientated with the area, travelling to a from the hotel was not an issue as nearly everything is within walking distance or a short train ride away and the Swissotel was easy to spot from a distance. The area is lovely and there are some wonderful shops and charachterful alleyways nearby. Finding places to eat is not a problem in Osaka, but I probably wouldn't recommend the hotel's Italian restaurant, Tavola 36 for anything more than a cocktail.
Next time I travel to Osaka I will definitely be staying at Swissotel.
