“Beautiful new hotel, slightly confusing building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2011

Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka is a beautiful new hotel that only opened its doors within the last year or so. We stayed there for a night back in October, and found it to be of exceptional value. Our room was wonderfully spacious for Japanese standards and immaculately clean. Sheets were fresh, the bathroom well-stocked and the furnishing top-notched.

If there's anything to complain about, it would have to be that the room was a little too dark (dark colored walls are to blame), and that there was no safety deposit box - but nothing too serious (there were also a few objectionable channels on TV, not good for children).

The lobby of the hotel is actually located on the 22nd floor of a new building (forgot the name) and the entire hotel sits on top of a large supermarket, bridal shops and some offices, through to the 31st floor (top floor). All rooms therefore have a wonderful view of downtown Osaka, although the viewpoints may be different. Nonetheless, this helped us a lot in terms of getting ourselves oriented around the city, and it's amazing to see the colors down there change throughout the day.

While the hotel is directly connected to the Namba station by underground, it is not easy to find (unless of course you arrive by OCAT - just next door - which we didnt). One would have to locate exits 20, 21 and 22 at Namba, and walk through a section of Namba Walks. Once you are past the shops and eateries, there will be further exit signs to exit 30 / A10, and the hotel is just by these 2 exits. On the ground, crossing the main thoroughfare and walking a few blocks east would lead you to Shinsaibashi. A short walk north will then bring you to Dotomburi - all very convenient. Wouldn't mind staying there again if I can get a good deal.

The hotel is directly accessible from the airport. The airport limousine from both airports (Itami / Kansai) stops right at the Osaka OCAT and is just next to the hotel. Good for 1st time travellers to Osaka.
It is also connected to the JR Line / sub-way lines. There is a supermarket right below the hotel and is open till midnight. Hotel room is spacious and clean. Great choice if you are looking for accessible hotel for travel within/out of Osaka given the rail access.

Hotel and access from airport - Thanks to reviewers of this hotel, I picked and stayed here for 4 nights with my family during recent visit to Osaka. Location was very good and access from Kansai Airport to OCAT station (next to hotel) by airport bus (1000yen per trip and 1800yen return) was fuss free. It was a little tricky getting from the bus stop (2nd floor of OCAT building) to hotel as the people we asked did not speak any English and there were no signs available. Anyway, if nobody stop you, do take the escalator to first floor (we were stopped and told to take lift with our luggages) and head towards the exit doors at the far end. To reach exit, you have to walk through corridor with shops on both sides (it was very early when we were there so all shops were closed). After exiting from the doors, the hotel is on the right. If you miss this and ended up in the basement, head towards the north exit and use escalator to go to street level, hotel is on the right. Once inside hotel building, take lift to reception on 22nd floor. My family had 2 double rooms which were very clean but a bit smaller than what we are used to. An early check in was not possible, so we left our luggage there while we explore the area. Things not provided by hotel which I miss - shower caps and coffee. I find the beds and pillows pretty comfortable but my children commented that beddings were hard.

Surroundings - Hotel is located on top ot the JR Namba line (different from Namba Station where there is an express train from airport) with direct access to underground Namba Walk and Namba Station. There is a very big supermarket at the basement next to the hotel which you can access via escalator on the 1st floor of hotel. Outside the supermarket, if you walk a bit further in, you will see Douter Cafe. Walk a little further in, you will be back inside the OCAT building and there is MacDonalds there as well. . There are many eateries in the underground Namba Walk area. From Exit B12, you can access covered shopping streets, Edobashi and Shinsabashi. If you plan to visit Den Den town, you can walk underground all the way to Nipponbashi station, exit on the right and walk about 7 mins. We also visited a local market on the opposite side of Den Den town called Kuramon Market. Market stetches for a few streets, quite interesting as it is a local market selling fresh produce.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights. The rooms are small as expected. Cleaniness is great. Hotel staff could be more helpful and friendly - they seem so cold. But the location is brilliant! It's so close to everything. We could practically walk to everywhere. And it makes it so easy for us to locate it when we first arrive in Japan with out luggage. The location is probably the one that makes this hotel a keeper.

I stayed here for 3 nights in early November as part of a 2 week trip in Japan with my partner. I wanted to stay in the Namba/Dotonbori area of Osaka and I chose this hotel because it was one of the top rated (and was available on my dates!)
This hotel can be accessed straight from Namba subway station (North exit) and yet I still had a bit of trouble finding it when we arrived. However, once you know where it is, the hotel really is a short hop, skip and jump to Namba station and also Dotonbori area of Osaka. It also takes a while to get to the reception because you have to enter the building and go up in the elevator to reception, then take another elevator up to the rooms.
One thing's for sure - Japanese hotel rooms are pretty small! Our room was perfectly clean and the bathroom was decent, but the room was very cosy with two of us and our luggage inside!
Hotel staff were very professional and helpful and we had no issues at all during our stay. We had the breakfast buffet the first morning we arrived and had a good feed but at AUD$25 each we decided we would be better off stocking up at the local convenience store for breakfast on other days.

Location was right above JR Namba station. After the control station, go straight and turn right, then turn left into a small walkway leading to Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka. Go straight and turn right to an escalator leading to the 1st floor of the Hotel. The reception/main lobby is on the 22nd floor - you need to take the lift there and check in. The night view is beautiful with lots of street lights and you can enjoy the sunset in the guest rooms too. The supermarket in the basement (next to JR Namba station) has discounts on bento sets every now and then AND i love their variety of goods available. The Hotel is only 15mins away from where the actions are - shopping, food! Get the restaurant guides and map you need from the reception. They're all very helpful and can speak english.

I booked 2 nights with Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka online. Check in and check out was fast and hassle free. This is a newly built hotel in 2009 if I remember correctly. The rooms were clean, spacious and tastefully done. I love their bathroom! The warm & cosy toilet seat with a big bathtub & nice set of toiletries (exception hand lotion - which most of the Hotels in Japan don't provide)! Overall it was perfect for big sized ones like me~ They'll place different sizes of sleepsuit for you to choose from.

The bed is from Simmons - quality sleep is what I look for during travel! Their pillows are pretty hard because of the "beanie backing".. it can be comfortable after you get used to it. The room's really perfect! They have a small wardrobe for you to hang your clothes and coat.

Service was impeccably good and consistent. The staff always greet us with a great smile which makes you feel good n perky.

I will be back!!

Located right next to the JR Namba and OCAT stations, the Monterey Grasmere Hotel has the perfect location for exploring Osaka and Kansai.

For arrivals/departures from Kansai airport, you can take an express airport bus to OCAT, or via the Nankai private train to the Nankai Namba station which is connected via underground passage to the hotel (follow signs to exit 30 next to OCAT and JR Namba). If you have a JR Rail Pass, you can take the express train to Tennoji and connect to JR Namba station.

The underground mall beneath the hotel also connects to the Kintetsu Namba station for service to Nara, and the Nankai Namba station for service to Koyasan. And the mall is connected to both the Midosuji and Yotsubashi subway lines, to get around the city (e.g. to the aquarium, to Osaka castle, to Universal Studios, or to Osaka and Shin-Osaka station for train connections to Kyoto, Kobe, and Himeji).

The hotel is also a 10 minute walk to Dotomburi, Shinabashi, and America-mura.

The hotel itself is very modern, despite the presence of a three-quarters scale replica of a hundred year old English church (popular for weddings) across from reception on the 22nd floor . The rooms are typical size for a Japanese business hotel--i.e. small by western standards but adequate. Everything's there--desk, coffee table/chair, closer--just very small. But it does have free wired internet, a refrigerator, and a hot water heater, and the view from the window over Osaka was fantastic.

We did not try the breakfast, as it was close to $30 USD per person, and the underground mall below the hotel and the area surrounding Namba station had dozens of places to eat. And directly underneath the hotel was a supermarket open to midnight, which was great for getting wine, beer, milk, fruit, snacks, etc.

All in all highly recommended, as long as you can deal with a small room.
