“Centrally located hotel; good value for $”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

Stayed here for 4 nights with my family. Although hotel has no interconnecting rooms, I appreciated that they made an effort to put both of our rooms together. Hotel has this wow factor when you step into the lobby but the superior rooms are ok. Big enough to put 3 single beds with space for a big luggage & 2 small ones. Closet is small though; only enough to hang abt 4 winter coats. Had no problems with the bed and comfortable pillows. The hotel seem to be pretty particular with the air quality in the room. They had a deodorizer spray and a portable machine to clean the air for your use! This is good for people with sensitive noses like mine! The only complaint I have is the carpet. They seem to be in need of some gd cleaning.
As for location, it is right above a big supermarket (opens till 11pm), the JR Namba which will take you to the airport, the Ocat bus terminal and other subway lines. Strangely, I could not take the JR direct from Kyoto to JR Namba. I had to change train from ShinOsaka station but this is no problem. You can walk to Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi thru the subway. The shopping underground is good too. As a guide to the hotel, just look out for the signages pointing to Ocat and walk past this part of the underground mall where there are European paintings hung on both sides.
I'll definitely stay here again given the value and convenience of this hotel. I didn't take the bus to the airport. Took the JR Namba line with a change at one of the stations. No hassle, no stair climbing as it was just at the opposite side. One reminder though, do not lose your hotel room card as they will charge you for it.

We stayed here for four nights in September and for the price we paid I could not ask for more. Located right next to Namba Walk makes transportation so easy! The rooms are large and comfortable, wifi worked very well. From the hotel it is a five minute walk to Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi. There is a great supermarket right next to the hotel as well! Service was friendly! I would stay here again on my next trip to Osaka.

We stayed here for 5 nights. The location was right above JR Namba station and within walking distance to the subway Namba station. It was very convenient for us to get to many tourist locations as there was 3 subway lines servicing our location. The hotel is very well connected to the underground mall and to the shopping districts in and around Namba.

The hotel had a huge supermarket opened from 9am to 12 midnight on the ground level with a big variety of cooked food and sushi. It was very convenient for us to get supper and snacks and we had very decent breakfast from the bread shop nearly every day. There are also coffee shops nearby for our occasional coffee cravings.

The hotel provided free wifi in the rooms and the rooms were the most spacious we stayed in Japan. The room looked new and well-kept, our bed was comfortable. We stayed on the 28th floor where we had an excellent view of the city scape. We could see the harbor and mountains from the windows and the night views were stunning. The hotel lobby is beautiful and comfortable.

OCAT (airport shuttle bus) is located very near the hotel and it is very convenient to get to Kansai airport from here. It takes around 5 min to get to OCAT on foot and another 1 hr by OCAT to the airport.

Room Tip: High floors command great city views.

Got the room at a heavily discounted price. The view was great on the 30th floor, amenities standard was good. The lift to the lobby can be hard to find and the walk to the subway and dotonbori (around 10mins) can be tiring after a long day. The JR station is next to the hotel so you may want to take the JR out to places like umeda instead of the subway. Decor was great, overall recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms are on the 22-30th floor

Choose this hotel if you intend to take limousine bus either for or to KIX. OCAT is just 2 min away.

Near Dotombori and Shinsaibashi, about 10min walk away. You can spend days shopping at the underground shops.

We did not get a room with city view. The bed is quite hard and the air in the room is dry, not sure if it is the aircon or the humidifier.

Service is good and you get to buy food from the supermarket on the basement of the hotel.

Very easy to get to hotel using the Airport Bus. Hotel is literally next to the OCAT bus terminal. The hotel is also very close to all the various rail lines, linked to the main eating and shopping street via the Namba station, as well as shopping malls, e.g. Takashimaya. Very convenient to travel out of Osaka from the Namba station, e.g. to Kyoto and Nara via the different rail lines. The rooms are fairly big for Japan standards, very clean and comfortable.

Having stayed previously at the Osaka Station area (Ritz Carlton & Hilton) as well as the Namba area (Swissotel Nankai), I much preferred the Namba area. It is the real entertainment area of Osaka, with very easy transfers to/via the Kansai airport, so it was my obvious choice again, travelling with parents who are in their 70's.

Took the short JR train from Nara to JR Namba (much shorter walking distance compared to the Kintetsu Nara or Nankai line), we simply exited the turnstiles and turned right to see the Supermarket. After that, its following the Hotel signs to locate the elevator to Ground level. Then its a lift up to the 22nd floor to leave our luggage. In fact, there is another more straight forward method - after the turnstiles, head straight ahead to find a steep escalator that leads you to 'outside' of the building, then turn right and walk 15-20m across a carpark entrance road to find the Hotel Monterey's grand Ground level entrance. Very easy indeed!

We then took a cab to the nearby Kuromon Ichiba, where we had a wealth of time eating all sorts of food - tempura, crabs, sashimi, uni (sea urchin) etc etc. Prices there are quite affordable and reasonable, due in part to lots of competition. Nice! Then its another short cab back to the Hotel to check in at 2.50pm. Surprisingly, my single room was of even better size than the one in Wakayama, very comfy indeed and it even has views of the Dotonbori area, very very nice indeed! Free Wifi in the room, even nicer!

As breakfasts was extra and very expensive, we always bought fresh bread from the basement Supermarket's bakery section, and had it with free coffee or tea in the room. The beds here, are also quite comfy, not as hard as the other Japanese hotels that I usually encounter. Location wise, couldn't be better - Dotonbori and the Shinsaibashi arcaded shoppng is only a 660 yen cab ride away (the meter don't even jump so the 3 of us had found the taxi to be of great value for shorter distances ...).

We had been surprised that the Hotel Monterey is graded only 4 stars since its common areas are very classy and full of European flair - something which I really liked. That is why, I would choose to stay with a Monterey Hotel wherever I can while in Japan. Have stayed in their Sapporo one and would soon stay in their Nagasaki and Fukuoka one.

Do remember to check out its mezzanine floor, ie 23rd floor. There is a little gorgeous outdoor garden there, with beautiful flowers, fountain, gazebo etc, really nice! And the Hotel's basement Supermarket was much larger than I imagined, offering a good last minute purchase of yummy Japanese food to bring home the next day ...

Needless to say, we simply exited the Monterey the next morning, turning left and walk 10-15m to the OCAT station building. We then walk to the centre of that building and took escalators up to the buses departure point on the second floor. Bus tickets are to be purchased from the Orange ticket machine and they do not sell advance tickets. We took the 8.10am bus and arrived at around 9am for our 11am flight - just nice & perfect, stress free, too.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors with Dotonbori views. Corner rooms like 2705 are larger, get a quote in advanc...
