“Good hotel close to top areas in Osaka”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

We did try to book Hillarys the first 2 days we were in Osaka, but could not get the dates. Finally managed to get bookings on our return leg.

Service: Minimum of two staff on duty at the reception counter, and they are all helpful.

Value: The hotel averaged Yen8,000 per room night for 2 pax with breakfast. Combined with their free use of bicycles, location, excellent breakfast, free flow of cocoa and soft drinks, free wifi at the lobby , it's great value.

Sleep Quality: comfortable twin beds, large enough to roll over on it, thick quilts made winter comfortable. An easily controllable airconditioning helped lots to get the right temperature that we wanted.

Cleanliness: Could not find any dirt. On the first day, the bathroom had a musty smell, we compalined, and the chambermaid cleaned it out, Good for the remaining 3 nights.

Location: 100m from Koremon market, 200m from Namba, 800m from Dontobury. 10min walk to Nankai Namba station to catch the limited express train to Kansai airport.

Highlghts: Use the 4 free bicycles to cycle everywhere in that area - just be careful where you park the bicycles cause if you park it in the mall, they clamp the bicycles and you have to pay a fine. Park along the side roads, or where you see many bicycles. Breakfast is great, meats, fish, rice, udon, salads, miso soup, mixed fruit salad for dessert - eat like lunch and you're good to go till dinner.

Room Tip: Book ahead from their website. Easy to locate from Nankai Namba station - head towards Sakai Soji w...

If you are looking just for a clean and cheap place to sleep and being close to the most of the happenings in Namba, this hotel is for you.
Rooms are extremely small with fair facilities for a 3 star hotel. There is lobby for free internet can drink access which I liked very much.

HINT: If you need non-smoking room, you have to mention it when you book a room. Nowadays, default of many hotels is non-smoking but not at this hotel! They gave us smoking room and it smelled a bit!

First off, expenses in Japan are expensive, Osaka apparently is rather mild compared to the other popular Japanese destinations. While the place wasn't really spacious, there was little walking space and the toilet especially, was really small, even as an average height Asian man, there's barely enough leg space when you're sitting on the toilet seat. The bath tub provided was also rather small, some might not be able to fit in there properly but showering isn't a problem. Another point is their power outlets are strangely close to the wall, it's like they don't want you using their power (which could easily be the case), some plugs, especially bulky adapters have difficulty squeezing into those tight spaces. If possible, getting slim adapters with extension cables might be a good thing to do.

Other than that I have nothing to complain about. The beds were nice, things were neat, they even had a smart toilet which warms the seat and have jets of water to wash your underside. The warm water isn't one of those which rely on a heated store so there's a constant flow of hot water, which is good. The view isn't magnificent, you can see the street in front of the hotel. The heater is good. You can keep yourself adequately warm or even overly warm if you're overzealous with the heating.

The hotel also provides free flow of coffee, green tea, several assorted soft drinks and a selection of different bathing soaps from the lobby. Wifi is also available at the hotel lobby and there's a LAN cable in the hotel room itself. Wifi at the lobby is free, not very sure about the LAN in the room because I didn't have my laptop with me.

Convenience wise, there's a 7-11 literally below the hotel. It's right beside the entrance to the hotel and the reception for the hotel is on the 2nd floor. On the other side of the entrance, still in the same building, there's a Cafe which provides a breakfast buffet for 500 yen. The food is relatively simple, but alright. Walking to the Metro stations, it's about 5-10 mins walk to the Nipponbashi station and a slightly longer walk from the Namba station. The Namba station is sort of like a central interchange station where you can switch to the different lines. The airport express goes to Namba but not Nipponbashi, so if you're travelling via public transport, it's quite convenient to stay here.

The area around the hotel is populated by several food stores, a few shopping streets, shopping centers, and other stores. There's a hardware store right across the road from the hotel, along with several Anime/Manga stores along that stretch of shops.

Overall it was a rather pleasant stay at the hotel, the place was nice, it was comfortable and convenient. Most importantly it was affordable.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor and some on the third closer to the stairs might be able to receive the fr...

We just booked this hotel because there were no affordable places to stay in Kyoto during the weekend we were supposed to be there. It was close to Nanba Station and had great prices, so why not?

I have to confess I wasn't expecting much, just a place to sleep after a long day of activities in the nearby Kyoto so it was all a great surprise!

Check-in was very smooth and when we opened the door of our room... MASSAGE CHAIR!!! Yep, there was a huge massage chair waiting for us and it was so, so great to spend some time on it after a full week of non-stop tourism around Tokyo!!!

The next day we were supposed to go to Kyoto but then we decided to watch a Bunraku play (highly recommended, although we didn't stay until the end - it lasts around 4h just the first half of it!). The National Bunraku Theater is close to the hotel, about 10min walk. We also walked from there to Osaka Castle but it was a bit tiring, around 30-45min, so we came back with the tube (Niponbashi station, 5-7min walk). At night, go visit the amazing district of Dotombori (10-15min walk) - try the Takoyakis from the street cars, very tasty! We also went to very nice sushi place there, Sushizaiman - not the best sushi in the world, but great value for money and still much, much better than any sushi you can get in the Occident :)

At the end, after staying for 2 nights at Hillary's, we went to Kyoto for another 2 nights but decided to come back to Hillary's for the night before our departure for Koyasan - it was much more convenient, as you can buy the Koyasan World Heritage Ticket at Nanba Station. After coming back from Koyasan, we also spent our last night in Japan at the Hillary's, before catching our flight at Kansai Airport - so it seems we liked, right?

The free drinks at the reception are very convenient, staff was very nice (they kept our bags for one day while we were sleeping at Koyasan) and Osaka happened to be a very interesting city, much more then we expected!

Only few not-so-good things:

- Bed was too hard for my taste, as well as the pillows with the little balls (but they are all around Japan, so I think we just have to get used to it).

- Bathroom is not small: it's TINY!!! But the shower was great and amenities were all Shiseido (I know Shiseido is not a big deal in Japan but in the Occident I cannot imagine a hotel which is not 5-star offering this brand).

- Breakfast at the coffee shop by the hotel is not that good... It's cheap (500Y) but we didn't like the food (although I love traditional japanese breakfast). With this money you can go next door to 7Eleven and buy lots of other delicious things!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a massage chair!!!!

Stayed at room no. 307 at the upper floor of the hotel reception and opposite of the lift. Not that noisy even though stay near to lift but I get to detect wifi from my room due to near to the reception. Good location. Do not borrow their bicycle because you need to find places to park your bicycle. We have a bad experience the hotel forfeited our deposit 2000yen because our bicycle been tow by the local town council. We are not been informed during we borrow the bicycle.

For the price that I paid for this hotel, I had not expected too much from it. To my pleasant surprise, my family's stay was an extremely comfortable one. After a long and tiring flight, followed by the train journey from the airport, the free beverage corner at the lobby was certainly a welcome sight. There was a good range of drinks available. The free shampoo bar was fascinating and I feel a generous gesture on the part of the hotel as each hotel room already had huge bottles of toiletries.
The room, though small, was sufficient for our use. There was enough space for our luggage and for our ease of movement. The toilet was well-stocked too. The tiny touches, such as placing a plate of sweets and even a paper crane on the table, made guests feel welcome upon entering the room. The room was clean and even though it was a smoking room, it did not reek of smoke at all.
The breakfast was good and one could hardly ask for more at 400 yen (member's price). It was so substantial that we could actually have a heavy breakfast and then grab a light lunch to see us through the day. If one got up early enough, one could even get free buns for breakfast.
The hotel is conveniently located, especially for those coming in from the airport. The Nankai line takes one directly from the airport to Namba station. The hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the station.
This hotel is highly recommended, especially for those who are travelling on a tight budget.

This hotel offers a lot of extras: free soft drinks in the lobby, a shampoo "bar" with free samples to try out, free internet, laundromats, etc. The lobby is a really nice space where you can relax and hang out. It's basically a classic hotel with a young, relaxed atmosphere.
The rooms are clean and comfortable. Location is excellent in Osaka's entertainment and shopping district.
