In November 2007 I had the chance to spend the week in Kyoto, walking through the streets, visiting gardens and temples and being amazed and bemused at how alien, as a western european, first time traveller to asia, never mind Japan, I felt.
During the week, one of the many delights was finding a small temple, I think it may have been a nunnery if my memory serves me right, a few minutes walk uphill, off the Philosophers Walk, in North Eastern Kyoto.
This temple has a stunning garden, especially as I was fortunate enough to visit it in the autumn. Unfortunatly I cannot say more as, of course, I picked up a japanese language leaflet on the temple rather than an english one.
If you wish to break your walk along the Philosophers path, then this is highly recommended for a visit and perhaps chance for brief contemplation.
