“Great place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2010

Stumbled upon this place while surfing for a cheap stay in kyoto-apparently an expensive place to stay and not much hostels can be found. Luckily I found this place and the website is very helpful. We booked the dorm style as the japanese style was taking already. The email correspondence was speedy.

On the day of our arrival, when they say they operate on a budget they do mean that and have specific hours. Check in is at 4pm and that's when they open. We were half an hour early so we wandered around the area and realized temples are nearby within walking distance. Finally checked in, the place is clean and they suggest great places to visit and eat. It's cute they even have a half day, evening and 4 day itinerary suggestions. Another plus is they have a folder that you can see what else to do on a budget--it was definitely helpful because we were trying to travel cheaply and we saved a couple of bucks here and there.

The staff speaks English--we mostly spoke to Taro, he is fluent in English and educated in America. The inn is within walking distance of the Kyoto station, convenient stores, bus stops, and some temples. When I visit Kyoto again, I will definitely come back here to sleep.

We stayed in one of the family rooms (previously the "golden room--now with more subdued wallpaper) and found it clean, comfortable, and a great value. The staff was friendly, allowed us to check in early (because the room had been vacant the previous night), and invited us to sake tasting in the evening. Easy walking distance from the train station made this the perfect place to stay for a too-quick visit to Kyoto.

I guess all expectations are different, but we knew that at budget accommodation we wouldn't be getting the largest rooms and all the fancy gadgets. What we wanted was something that was central, clean, staffed by friendly people and with some interesting guests with whom we could mingle.

The Budget Inn met all these criteria. We were particularly impressed with the frindliness of the staff and the great tips they provided on restaurants and getting around Kyoto. Their level of English was excellent.

If you're a budget traveller it is a great place to stay. Congratulations to Keiji and his staff and thanks for making our stay a great one.

We decided last minute to go to Kyoto, and stumbled in on Budget inn. We not only had a great japanese style room that was clean and comfortable, but we relished in our awesome location, too. We rented bikes and biked a popular 'walking tour' then came back to the ryokan and went to a recommended sento down the street. A great experience and would definitely come back!

This hostel is located just a few minutes from Kyoto station and many dining options. I stayed here 5 nights in the mixed dorm: the room was clean and provided with air conditioning and free wireless Internet connection. There is also a common room where guests can enjoy a free tea/coffee, this is a great opportunity to meet other people, expecially if you are a solo backpacker as I was. I met many other Europeans and enjoyed visiting the city with them. I also received two nice chopsticks from the reception guy when I checked out!

It was a nice place to stay, mainly because you'll easily meet a lot of other people from all over the world in the living room (as long as you're traveling in summer or, probably, in spring, too). Whenever there's full house, and during my 8 nights' stay, there was always full house, there was free sake 'tasting' in the evening, which meant most of the people staying there would come to the living room, have a nice chat and sometimes also go out afterwards together. That's especially nice if you're travelling alone and looking for some company (though you'll be disappointed if your desired company is Japanese only).
The location was okay, depending on your preference. The vicinity doesn't have the busiest night life, but it's close to the station (5 min walk) and the city centre. An important difference to the Tour Club inn often recommended in travel guides (run by the same owner and practically just next door) is that the Budget Inn doesn't have a curfew, so if you're looking for a cheap place for night life and don't mind a bit of walking, this place might still be good.
Service is the most negative point about the Budget Inn. Though most of the staff speak very good English, you're asked to use the toilets cleanly (which is legitimate in itself) because 'in order to keep prices low', staff won't clean it too often (which is bad if someone doesn't follow the rule to be clean on the toilet).

Our family of four stayed at Budget Inn in this July.
This place is quiet and the staff is so nice!
All the info and little maps were awesome help.
The location was nice and close to a lot of sites and bus stops and train stations.
