“TOYOKO INN KYOTO”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

This hotel is in a centrally located area of Kyoto and on a main street not too far from the Kyoto Station. The rooms are small but comfortable and they have all the normal amenities including a yakata for your personal use. The hotel serves mainly Japanese cliental and provides a traditional Japanese breakfast each morning. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. A shuttle is available daily but only goes to the subway station. The hotel is a good value and I would gladly stay here on my next visit.

Although the hotel is said to be 2 stars, it is very comfortable and you have everything in your room: air-conditioner, fan, toiletries, fridge, etc. The room is very clean and neat, they tidy it up every day. The personnel is polite and always ready to help you. Breakfast is included. Though for us it was a bit expensive, but it is not expensive for Japan.

Room Tip: Our windows looked out on the wall of another house :)

Typical Toyoko-inn, it is not a place for honey moon trip, not a hotel for you to to sit and release for a whole day; It is a well located budget hotel with reasonably clean and comfortable place (priced considered). You will get free wifi too (as with many other Toyoko-inn, if not, you get wired interenet too) .

It is not close to JR station(many Toyoko-inn do) but it's in the downtown, close to metro station and it is easy to take a bus to the attractions of the city. You can find restaurants, coffee shops around the hotel easily.

Room is small, a little bit dim. Don't expect beautiful decorations. Overall the room, WC and bathroom is clean enough.

Breakfast is provided, although I have never been a fan of their breakfast, I would happily skip it if I find something interesting nearby. There is no restaurants (they provide simple Japanese style breakfast only) or shops inside the hotel, you can only find vending machines.

Service quality is never really an issue in Japan, this Toyoko-inn is no exception. The staffs at the front desk are polite, helpful and can communicate effectively in English.

I think it provides good value and is great for travelers who only need a convenient, basic yet reliable place to stay. I became a member there so I can pay even less. The ratings are given with considerations that it is a budget hotel.

Room Tip: Try to stay further away from the elevator since the room right next to it have some noise (notifica...

Location is excellent. Bus stop (Shijo Takakura 四条高倉) at the front of hotel, the bus routes covers some key sightseeing areas. I stayed there during the last week of March and they posted at the lobby the temples and parks where there were cherry blossoms with the bus numbers.

The Hankyu line and subway is connected and they are just next to the hotel. You can travel to Sannomiya, Umeda, Awaji... by the Hankyu line. For JR you have to goto Kyoto station, but during my one week stay in Kyoto, I travelled mainly by bus, Hankyu line, subway and Randen line to those sightseeing spots, Sagano(嵯峨野), Arashiyama(嵐山), Kinkaku-ji(金閣寺), Kiyomizu-dera(清水寺), Maruyama Park(圓山公園), Daigo-ji(醍醐寺), Nijo castle (二条城)...

Daimaru department store, United Arrows, convenient stores, book shops, pharmacies, some popular brands, japanese or western restaurants... everything is around because the hotel locates at the main road, you can walk to Kawara-machi(河原町), Nishiki Market(錦市場) Gion(祇園), it takes around 20 to 30 mins to Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) but you would not feel boring or tired because there are so many things to see on the way or you can take a bus.

Breakfast are free and delicious though not many choices, rice balls with different types of mince, miso soup, pickles, salad, free distilled water at the lobby... what more to ask? They posted the weekly breakfast menu in the escalator and there are questionnaires for breakfast at the dining tables in lobby.

Rooms are typical toyoko inn’s room, a small wardrobe, double bed, tv, electric kettle, slippers, humidifier, iron board... no amenities except towels in the bathroom, some basic stuff provided at reception.

Some tips applies to all toyoko inn, join the eco plan upon check in for no cleaning service max consecutive two nights, the room rate would further discount ¥300 per night, they would change bath towels even not cleaning and I found this is pretty good for money saving and eco friendly.
Very convenient booking system of toyoko inn and once you apply for the membership you can book six months ahead and at a discount rate.

Due to booking a last minute trip to Kyoto in the middle of sakura season, there were hardly any hotel choices at all, so I decided to stay in this Toyoko Inn. Whichever hotel in the chain you're staying at, the rooms are very similar. It's a reliable budget hotel chain. The rooms are cramped but well planned, as expected l for Japanese business hotels in this price category.

The hotel seemed to be very full at the time, with more tourists than business travellers. Still, the staff managed to deal with this very efficiently and were always very polite.

The complimentary self-serve breakfast in the lobby was Japanese style (onigiri, miso soup, tsukemono, salad, coffee/tea), quite decent actually.

A few things that set this hotel apart from other Toyoko Inn:
Better location than the average Toyoko Inn - centrally located in the downtown area, very close to Shijo-Karasuma station. Free wifi available throughout the hotel - not the case in all Toyoko Inn (and certainly not Japanese hotels in general). Also, the single room had a proper closet, instead of just a few hangers on the wall.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor to avoid noise from street level.

I stayed at this branch of Toyoko Inn in Kyoto for 4 nights, along with it's sister branches in Osaka and Tokyo on my month long trip to Japan this spring.
Toyoko Inn not only has branches at the best locations in Japan but also offers affordable rates for its basic but comfortable rooms, and splendid amenities. The service provided by the hotel staff of all Toyoko Inn branches is simply excellent; they are courteous and helpful and always go the extra mile to make sure that all guests are tended to in the most efficient manner.
Wifi is free and available throughout the hotel and guests can do the own laundry at any time they wish. There is even an ice machine in the lobby.
I am now a member of this chain and will definitely be a repeat customer on many trips to come.

The hotel is great, the room is comfortable and clean.
The attention is great also, they speak english so is easy to ask questions in a city that nobody speaks english.
Just a few blocks from the market and the geisha district. Besides the subway station.
