“Covenient, great location, cheap and clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2010

If you want to stay Kyoto Central, right next door to the Kyoto train station with all it's great access and shopping then this is the place, good sized rooms, very clean and equally very well priced. Obviously used to be a classy joint, but has aged a bit, saying that it was still way cool Hotel, plenty of facilities and great free internet. The Hotel basically sits on a Shopping Centre with about 20 nice little resteraunts to choose from underneath and a chemist and convenience store right close by. Take it from an 8 time visitor to this great country you wont get better value for money in Kyoto Central

Location is very convenient for train access. A bit far from the city centre and the main tourist attractions. Shopping mall next doors is very handy. Rooms are very comfortable, spacious and clean. Very helpful staff.

The location is awesome to travel in trains - just across kyoto station bullet train terminal. Literally 2 minutes walk. We made 3 day trips with the shinkansen so it was really nice.
Also from there you can take the JR line to Nara Osaka and Kobe, and the subway to downtown.

The hotel is very basic, the rooms are basic as well - but in good shape. They give every possible thing you can think of, toothbrush with toothpaste, hair brush, hair band, shower cap everything!
The room we got was 2 beds but it was bigger than the queen size bad rooms - so we stayed.

We paid 110$ per night and got free breakfast - so we were happy.

The service was almost great, except for one time when we asked for the key to our room and were answered they don't know where it is - even though we gave it to them that morning :(

All in all - recommended

At $157 for a single bed room, this hotel is more expensive than what I am used to in Okinawa. It is across the street from Kyoto Station the Kyoto transportation hub, very convenient. My room is nice, the bed very comfortable and the pillow with loaves of some kind of bean like bead on one side is really interesting.
Service is not good, when I asked for a fan or help with the A/C I was put off and after making several calls one of the staff came up and very crankily told me that there would be no fan and that there is no A/C in the rooms...could have just said that on the phone.
They provide filtered water with ice on every floor, something that Europe and the US could do and win my vote. The restaurants serve mediocre food at outrageous prices and a bieru (beer) is $5, draft. Maybe this is normal for mainland Japan... There is not one word of english on any menu here at this hotel.
Kyoto Station has tons of restaurants from Mickie-D's up to quite elegant restaurants - so no fret there.
The hotel is, as others have said, nothing special. Next time I am here, I will stay in a Ryokan.

Hotel is very ordinary but handy for the rail station area of central Kyoto. You can get anywhere pretty fast although finding your way around the rail station for the first time is quite an adventure.

There are three restaurants on the top floor and breakfast in the mornings nearly always involved queueing. I tried the Chinese restaurant one very wet evening when I couldn't be bothered to go out in the rain and was thoroughly unimpressed.

I had a single room which was very, very, very small and overlooked the blank concrete wall of the building next door. TV is Japanese channels only so if you do wake up at some strange hour in the middle of the night through jet-lag don't rely on being entertained via that medium.

The room did have air-con but it was not terribly effective. Otherwise everything was clean and efficient if somewhat dull.

The hotel can be reached underground from the station, by heading to Avanti department store, then taking the elevator in the left corner. This goes direct to the hotel's 2nd floor reception (2nd US, 1st UK) and then on to the room floors.
The room was large for Japan, and the bathroom was not as small as some can be. The decor was clean, but worn and there were less comforts than usual - i.e. no safe, only instant green tea, no coffee. However, the bed was comfortable and the rates are good.
The hotel is south of the main railway station, which means you are separated from much of the town's centre. It's a 10 minute walk through the station to get anywhere, so it would be worth checking out hotels north of the station too.
For me, Kyoto was surprisingly quiet in the town centre... Then we found the Gion area! This had much better shopping, bars, restaurants.

  • Liked — Comfortable
  • Disliked — Smoky - like a lot of Japanese hotels, they allow smoking in most rooms

Stayed here for 3 nights this August. A convenient location within walking distance of the massive Kyoto train station. The hotel is on the South side of the Kyoto train station so you will have to cut through the station to go to the bus terminals and main sites. A very good location though because taxis are relatively cheap and the station itself has lots of amenities, restaurants, stores, etc. A fun moderately priced mall is attached to the Hotel Keihan including a Uniqlo which is like a Japanese Gap. I would stay here agin. Internet access in the room.
