“Your basic train station hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012 via mobile

Basic, no thrills, hotel located just south of kyoto station. No one is going to greet you at the door or carry your bags to your room but who needs that? The location is ideal if you want to pick up transportation each day to visit the sites. The downsides? Very smokey rooms and few if any non-smoking rooms. No wifi in rooms. No charm to speak of.

Stayed here for two nights in mid-May with a group of college students. The location is not ideal South of the train station - 15 minute walk through (under) the train station to the bus hub on the North side - a long haul at the end a temple seeing. My first impression based on the decor and the smell (thick, stale cigarette smoke smell everywhere) was of a cheap Las Vegas hotel, sans the gambling. Our non-smoking room was pretty nice - big enough. I could feel the springs in my too firm bed though, and no mini-bar. American breakfast was lacking - not very well done. Next time staying North of the train station.

As the other reviewers all say the best thing about this hotel is the location. It is just minutes from the subway, trains and buses around the main railway station. You can walk out of your room and be on the subway in 5 minutes. The airport buses stop right outside as well. I eat one meal in the Japanese restaurant and it was very good but very expensive and you could probably have got the same quality for half the price elsewhere. The Chinese restaurant is even more expensive so I didn't go there. The room was very expensive and twice what I paid in Osaka but that is probably just the Kyoto tourist prices.

This hotel is located very close to Kyoto train station and there is a bus terminal just in front of it. The location is indeed very good. But it is worth to note that there's no direct crossing from the station to the hotel. You must use a underpass which will be a burden if you are traveling with big luggages.

The hotel has a large looking lobby, plus decorations that is rarely to be seen in today's Japan hotel. It reminds me that it should be a tourist hotel back to when it was built. However, it is not in its best shape now. It's still clean, but looks old comparing to other modern business hotels I have stayed in Japan, with a slightly dimming atmosphere. My room is smaller than what I expected from this class of hotel. It's clean and comfortable, but Iooks a bit old fashioned, too.

There are 2 restaurants offer breakfast. A buffet restaurant and a Japanese style restaurant. Normally I will choose buffet. But This time, I chose Japanese restaurant because I thought Japanese cuisine would tastes better in Kyoto. I was wrong, it was tasteless. But maybe that's because I don't know how to appreciate it.

Anyway, for the price it costs, I expect a little more. But considering that most hotels in Kyoto are overpriced, i will say it is still an acceptable, average hotel.

The hotyel is across from the major railway station in Kyoto. The hotel is clean and well run, and is a great place to stay

Room Tip: Higher up gives a better view of the hills

The hotel is just a couple of minutes walk from the JR Shinkansen station. Also, a subway leads almost to the entrance of the hotel, convenient to use when weather turns bad. We paid 15,000 yen for a two-night weekday stay for two. The tariff did not include breakfast but with many eateries, convenience stores and shops nearby, breakfast can be picked up easily as also anything else one requires. Some nice restaurants in the area, too. The room was sizeable by Japanese standards and spotlessly clean, as was the bath. Comfortable bed though the unusual pillow with the bean-like filling may require getting used to. The temples of Higashi Hongan-ji and Nishi-Hongan-ji are a short walk from the hotel. The other Kyoto attractions can be accessed by local bus – the bus station is just across from the hotel. Since the buses start from here, one is certain to get a seat (and be able to catch passing sights) when going to the comparatively farther attractions of Kinkaku-ji, Kamigamo-jinga and Shimogamo-jinga. To-ji, too, is easier to access from the station area. There is a bus almost every minute from here to the popular sights of Kiyomizu-dera and Gion (15-minute bus rides), so the hotel location being in central Kyoto is irrelevant. The 500-yen Day Pass for the bus is well worth the money (in Kyoto, one can easily make trips worth 1200 yen at least per day). The front-desk staff is efficient and very helpful. The hotel held our luggage from check-out until 8:00pm for our train to Osaka without any charge giving us an extra hands-free day to enjoy Kyoto.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing the station if you want to get more of the Kyoto experience.

This was the second hotel I stayed at as part of a tour traveling across Japan, and perhaps the best out of the four total accomodations booked. As previous reviewers mentioned, it was conveniently located across from JR Kyoto Station (with it's shops and restaurants). The room I was assigned was clean, efficient, and quite roomy compared to the previous hotel we stayed at due to the organized layout of the beds and furniture (could easily store all our bags in the room itself and move around without tripping over them). There was also a hot food vending machine attached to hotel corridor wall near my room, with grab 'n go meals of Curry Rice, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Oden, and Beef Bowl... Never seen one of those before (and no chance to try it), but thought it was rather convenient for any really late night arrivals when the restaurants are closed.

We only had the breakfast buffet at the top level of the hotel, so no reviews about how the lunch and dinners were there. The breakfast buffet was split into two separate facilities, one serving a traditional Japanese morning menu (view of Kyoto Station) , and the other Western-style fare (view of East Kyoto), so you had choose between which type food you wanted, as opposed to having both menus served in the same restaurant. Ate at the Western-style buffet and thought it was rather good with a selection of choices (nice sunrise view to go with your meal as well).

Did not have time to visit the shopping center connected to the hotel, but the subway stop underneath Kyoto Station made access to the heart of the city quite easy. Our tour had chartered a bus to several Kyoto attractions, so I can't say how this hotel location fares with regards to access to those destinations by using Kyoto public transportation.
